|

i get asked this kinda often .....i have made some templates from an original fender in the past , it has been used several times .......... some one is again asking me for heart tail light locations ........ would others be interested if i made up a few more copies ? here is what i made in the past ...
i even sent a copy of this to guy in Columbia once .
you just flip it over to do the other side so fits left n right .
not sure why no vender has done this . is it something i should consider making a few more copies of ???
the bumper bracket hole and the corner bend of the fender line up to set it right n mark your holes . in this area is where the fender is most flat and lines up nice .
if i find enough interest ill make up a few copies . i just transfered em to paper with a pencil last time , but maybe i can go get photo copies made . this one is made from thick craft paper . used spray paint n the template to mark a few fenders is why you see the primer
these here were new after market fenders that i did this too . look how high they wanted you to mount the wiring hole ? the little black plug .
not sure this is the fender it was made from but here is a heart fender i have for sale in the classifieds .

Fantastic idea! I have my 54 at a paint and body shop right now and it had the later fenders on it. I bought WW repops and it was a cool $2200 because I wanted the lights in the correct location (primarily). The fenders were a little banged up but it still would have been less expensive to use this template on the existing fenders.
I would love a template if you do not mind? PM me if you like _________________ 54 Oval |

thats not a big enough printer . i have like a roll of thick white butcher paper , i have 3 pieces of paper cut to try n make a few templates by hand here . need to clear off a space big enough ... this template is 18 by 26 inches .
edit , here is my first one today , i just do it lighly with a super sharp pencil by hand for best accuracy , one of the edges is a straight line but the one that arches the rear apron is not a staraight line due to the curvature . i let you do the cutting , once cut n taped to the car i spray painted thru the template to mark it .
crappy picture doesnt show up too good , its 104 outside so i snapped it inside the house
i think i have some manila envelopes to mail em in but dont know the cost yet .
the two larger holes are for the heart tail light body gasket , it goes into those holes , the smaller holes are for the bulb holder assembly . if you have the bumper bracket hole already its a real snap to line up everything .

OK i have 3 templates made up , folded and in 9 by 12 manila envelopes ready to mail .
10 dollars a template and 5 dollars usps ground shipping in the states .
i know this isnt a classifieds add just testing the waters first to see if any more should be made ?
my original template here was made from roofing tar paper so its quite robust .

I have a similar template made from a brown paper shopping bag and sharpie, that was given to me by Robert Chambers a few years ago..
So far it's helped 5 cars and been copied twice, good to keep it going.
If you could have it scanned to a scaled file, it could be hosted here on Samba, and sent to print at any place that does blueprints. Though, the brown paper bag is better suited to the nature of these cars, IMO

im gona be 70 years old in 2 more months , i been around VW's my whole life , my mom drove us 3 kids to school in a VW bug on Oahu !!! as a teenager i was set on a Oval Cal bug and in my 20's made one up ....... 30 40 years go by and i wish i hadent done all those modifications . had 1 piece windows , de chromed , nurff bars , Porshe india red paint with gold pearl on top n all , it was beautiful at the time to me ..... its a lot of work getting it back to what it was originaly , BUT i didn't not let all those parts go to waste . i re drilled n made all those work again looking stock but were not good enough for my oval any longer so we made up FRANKENBUG using all the scraps , it started as a Baja bug when i got it . so thats where some of my templates came from . i have em for front hood emblems , split bug horn grills ect and others .
as i got even older in started ditching some of these do dads off the back of the bug , its looking closer to stock today . but still has the convertible deck lid .
this is my daily driver today , or every other day driver , my only registered car today . re cutting horn grill holes that had been welded shut left em too thick and hard to get horn grills to stay on .........the oval today has NOS front bullet fenders , like imposable to find today . i sold the last NOS one i had about a year ago and shipped it to Canada .
even my oval is two cars cut n half n welded together , its a 56 from the windshield forward , and 53 from there back ..... you can not tell unless i really point things out !!! |
