Look at the pics to the right of it. The bottom looks like a bucket or something is in there with the seat removed. Im sure rsbadura will know. Maybe a battery tester.

I personally enjoy how Hazet posed him like those paintings of Christ gesturing with his hand down to left. Hazet will heal your car!

Hello everyone,
SplitBusVanatic wrote:

I found this half devider in a lot of sketches as the patent of 1953, the instruction leaflet, the 1954 catalog drawings and probably only one blurry photo from a trade fair (page 228), in a VW brochure listet as VW 1169 with the Hazet catalog drawing... , these new (around 2000) advertising coffee can and metal sign (origin of these classic like drawing is currently unknown).

but no one have seen this in real life - all today known and photos can be found on the Internet of the 160 have a full size divider. The divider from column to column also gives the whole thing much more stability for heavy loads - a good improvement. I also asked these questions in a German forum with HAZET employees more than one year ago - without any result. Maybe just a rejected prototype/pre-production solution - or only some of them with this?!?

At mine the devider was missing - there were also no scratches or evidence of a half divider - but a full early and also rare divider fits perfect on both sides - that's why I restored my 160 with a full size divider - I can still cut it off if I get more info Wink
I continue to watch classifieds and forums on the topic... but these Hazet 160 in any condition are very rare. If you see one of these, let me know...

the Hazet 802 battery service box appeared a few years later in 1958.
The 161/162 as the successor to the 160 appeared already in 1955.

There was no set of the 160 or 500 A (a 160 with VW tool set) that includes something big, that requires a half divider.

In a 1954 Hazet catalog page 32 drawing you see the standard included tools of the set a (later order number 2140-5) 500 g hammer and (later 1950-4) rubber soft-faced hammer in the free space, on the side of the divider a grease can and the (later 2160) oil can... the same drawing as at the middle at the right side of the metal sign from around 2000 - only the lamp was a little bit modified/rotated.

Just a regular Hazet - would make a cool drink stand.

The alure to folks in the North Americas with Hazet, especially Euro car guys, is that the tool company was very chummy with manufactures like VW, Porsche, Mercedes, BMW... Because of this, they made tools specific to those cars. Furthermore, Hazet was not imported as any kind of real competition here, so seeing them is limited.

On the other hand, in Europe, it was a big seller and producer. Making carts like this very common. So to see the cart here is cool and you may get a couple bucks out of it more so than you would in Germany. But the reality is I could buy 3 very nice clean, unrestored carts in Germany for 100-150 range each, ship them to me here in SoCal and sell them for 325-400 each? on a good day. Making a slight profit.

Hello everyone,

@notchboy: nice find! Applause

My next discovery: a set of two HAZET 1618 (1967-1972) or later as 161-8 (1976-2010) window pane holder,
which are inserted into both columns of an HAZET Assistent like the 1615 lamp or the test device holder 1620.
The air can be released into or out of the suction cups by loosening the brass cap nuts with plastic seal inserts.
Allready cleaned and polished.

Jason,

Yes, I agree it is real. The bolts that attach the plywood seat to the legs are wrong. It should be riveted through the wood to the top side of the oval tube. After that the plywood was covered with vinyl. Not a big deal to fix if you cared.

Are there two types of tray dividers ? Or is the one on the right a DIY job
(I know. The one on ledt should be blue) ?

I found a selection of dividers in my stash of Assistent parts.
20 in all. Strangely

Hello,

in my 1967-1976 166 TS are already the embossed versions.
Also a Porsche brochure with 162 photos from 1968 shows embossed versions.
In my early 160 from 1954 the panels are fixed and flat.

I think also these flat dividers are original from the 1950s and early 1960s,
because I have seen them in the early 161/162 version with flat top and
in a DKW brochure with 161 and 162 photos from 1955 and
such flat dividers as none standard length dividers as
- 1605 (half length for the long 1602 slot divider across the long side) and
- 1607 (full length across the long side).
Not sure in which year they switched to the embossed versions...

I have been re-reading this thread for a few years, with a growing interest in getting an Assistent. Finally decided to just do it, and started browsing here, eBay, and Craigslist.

It seems like the market just dried up, and the only ones that showed up were brand new, or older models that were way high. I found a 160 on eBay, pretty rough shape and altered from original for 750 obo (Plus $$$ shipping). I obo'd and never got a response. In the meantime I ran into the one I finally bit on- a 162N from early to mid 1980's.

It came in two shipments, and I came home from vacation to find the first box, which contains the bottom of the trolley, the tubular uprights, all the casters and rear axle, and the black knobs.

My plan is to more preserve than restore, but a few areas will need intervention. There is what looks like body filler dried on the inside of the bottom 'bucket', and also some broken areas of paint with nasty looking rust (no rust-through yet).

A couple of questions I have:

1. The steel tube uprights- are they just stainless, or were they given any protective finish originally?

2. Has anyone found a close match to the blue paint?

3. The locking casters on my trolley have some pitting and show evidence of being wire wheeled. Was the original finish for these just plain stainless? I am considering disassembling them and electroplating with zinc.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

Nice find - with the lettering "Made in West Germany" used around 1979 to 1990 by HAZET.
(after a general legal dispute with the Russian sector East Germany in 1970s and till reunion of Germany in 1990)

Quote:

I'd put a rubber mat in the tub anyway to prevent rattling when moving it.
The rust should still be removed and stopped.

Quote:
1. The steel tube uprights- are they just stainless, or were they given any protective finish originally?

I don't know details about the later models past the 1970s.
In early models like my 160 from 1954, it was more likely nickel-plated – in my luxury version, the 166 TS, it's bright chrome-plated.
In very modern models, it's more likely to have been made of stainless steel.
No magnet will stick to some types of stainless steel - have you test it?

Quote:
2. Has anyone found a close match to the blue paint?

It is documented by HAZET in the corporate identity rules, see https://www.hazet.de/en/downloads-applications/corporate-design.
In Germany/Europe we have for a lot of colors (not all!) a specification called RAL with numbering scheme - so the light blue is "RAL 660-2 Effect" or "RAL E2 EFFECT 660-2 BLUE" or something like that.
So with this you could buy it in Europe in shops (e.g. https://spraymyday.com/produkt/acryllack-in-ral-e2-effect-660-2-blue/) or you can take it to the nearest paint supplier and have it mixed by RAL color tables. Or go with your parts to a paint supplier with color scanner to find the mixture (but first find a clean and unadulterated place, e.g. below, where UV light never changed the color over the years).

Without having done a chemical analysis myself, I assume that they were/are zinc galvanized since 1950s and only current ones could be stainless steel.
In the pictures shown they still look relatively good. I've also seen some that are quite rusty.

regards,

That looks excellent. If I were you I’d find some paint close to your cart’s blue and rust treat and prime and paint only that area that’s affected. If it’s off in colour a little. It won’t be as noticeable as it’s on the inner of the tub. If it’s a thing that the remaining trays of your cart are as good as the tub outer, it would a shame to paint. The pitting on the wheel parts is weird, but I wouldn’t do anything to those either. New wheels are available if you were inclined to build a show cart.

Congratulations on joining the Hazet Assistent club.
All the best.

Some light surface rust. I’ll treat and paint.
Plan is to give it a light resto. I’m gonna retain the stickers. They’re cool.
Another older Assistent, (as in mid fifties) coming soon. Stay tuned.

Thank you for the valuable information!

Agree that leaving the original finishes intact is the way to go. I do worry about the casters a bit. I'll provide some updates. I pick up the box with the rest of the trolley today. Eager to see how it all looks.

Thanks again!
