I bought some 1983 diesel engine mounts to replace the ones in my 1982 Vanagon. I knew the bolts were larger and the holes in the engine carrier would have to be enlarged to fit the new mounts, but I hadn't realized the mounts themselves were also larger. I think the size difference is going to lift the engine about 5mm or so? That's presumably small enough to not make much difference with the engine cover or overall positioning in the van.

Any tricks or advice for drilling a round hole in the current oblong one?

hope all works out.

For drilling the hole, find yourself a thick washer with the hole size you want.
Use a vice grip to clamp it in position, and use it as a drilling guide.
Slow with little pressure and you should be good.

How about a sleeve for the mount to reduce the ID to match the 82? You might find some tubing that will work. Also, if the mount were sitting on the smaller diameter bolt, once it’s tightened it likely will be pinched tight.

Instead of adapting to the '83 mounts, you might consider adapting/upgrading to a set of hydraulic mounts.

I made a shim when I installed the 83 mounts in my 82 van. They have been in there for about 6 years with no problems. John
