77 Bus final wiring problem. So Ive learned to use the wiring diagram and I have traced every wire under my dash from fuses to switches and their numbers and am pretty sure everything is were it should be.
I still have some problem between the hazard switch and the turn signal switch. I keep blowing my 8 (when using hazards) and 12 (when using right turn signal (left works as it should)).
I have narrowed it down to the Blk and Grn wire plugged into the R on the hazard switch and going up to turn signal switch. If I leave that wire plugged in to the hazards but travel up to the splitter and disconnect the one going up to the turn signal (but keep the one going to all my lights) all lights flash as they are supposed to. When I connect that green and black to the splitter that travels up to the turn signal switch is when I have the problem. When using hazards the 8 immediately blows. When using left turn signal all is good. When using right turn signal #12 blows. When unplugging the turn signal harness from bottom of the column The hazards work fine but obviously no turn signals
I have taken my turn signal switch (and wiper switch) out and all seems good (although you cant really see any contacts). There is no play, it looks clean (and I sprayed some contact cleaner in it), it seems solid. I have a hard time believing its the switch.
Any thoughts to help me with my final electrical step???? |

it seems from your description that the signal switch may be the issue.
a lot of electrical things can look good, but you need to test them with a multimeter to find out. _________________ 88 Van WBX, A/T - 13 JSW TDI 6M/T - 2012 Touareg TDI Sport |

I had the exact same problem with my 1977 2.0L Automatic. It occured a week ago, and today I was able to (maybe) sort it out. I have been tracing the wires, checking the lamps and bulbs etc. Even taken the hazard switch apart...
The problem disappeard after I yanked the bundle of wires that goes to the service socket in the engine compartment. My guess is that the wire that goes from the right rear turnsignal to the service socket might have made contact to ground somewhere, shorting the curcuit.
On my vehicle the service socket can be found on the right side of the engine compartment, just over the battery.

make sure the top of the hazard switch has not popped off. It is live so be careful. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

A common issue is that the indicator wiring goes across the top of the handbrake lever and this wears through the wires insulation over time, so when you pull back on the handle while indicating it blows the fuse. Mine always blew the fuse in the same place, doing a hill start going up a fairly steep section of road that needed full brake action to hold the bus.
So I was hauling the wiring loom back with the lever.
Insulation tape and zip ties to hold wiring clear of the lever have stopped the problem. _________________ Ancient vehicles and vessels
