Pic shows the pitting well, its rather deep. Should I fill er up with some JB weld? Or leave as is. I have always had leak issues from here. The stud it is next to is also helicoiled due to a previous strip.

Don't mess with it. It'll seal just fine like it currently is.
Do get some replacement drain cover studs. Using blots there is asking for trouble down the road. _________________ I have learned over the years.

yep theyre in the mail. Took this photo today while removing the old ones that I didnt trust.
I got the ones with a shoulder from WW, they have mixed reviews here, but I think theyll be fine.
I also purchased their silicone seal kit, as the cardboard has never sealed for me _________________ 1972 Super Beetle, Parked until adequate restoration funding is acquired in restoration!

I have used the silicone before.
They are a little fragile, but reusable a few times.
Check your drain cover to make sure that the mating surface is flat and makes a good seal to the case.
If any of the stud holes are dimpled toward the case, flatten them. _________________ I have learned over the years.

More than just a few times, in my experience — I’ve had the same set of those silicone sump gaskets on my car for over 6 years now. I just clean and reuse them every time I change the oil. They’ve never leaked on me yet!
Recommend exercising reasonable care when removing and installing them, plus using the correct tightening sequence & torque on the nuts that hold it all down. _________________ 1971 Standard Beetle — fairly stock / driver

Leave as is.

So have many others ! Right now I'm using the silicone gaskets on my two VWs.

Leave that be, as long as it stays. Myself: I'd order 7mm x 6mm step stud or 8mm x 6mm step stud to have on-hand should that fail. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Clean well and 'paint' the paper gaskets with Permatex 3H snug down wait an hour till final sequence torque and wait a day before putting oil in. Works for me. The only downside is clean up. I also put a drop in my acorn nuts, it will squeeze out and coat your crush washers. Every thing needs to be squeaky clean, flat cover with no dimples for satisfactory results. |

Denatured alcohol or 90% isopropyl alcohol will clean up brown Permatex Aviation. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Yep, denatured alcohol works great for lots of things. And it has that good hospital smell. |

Replaced most of the studs with the WW ones, and silicone seals. So far looking promising. However I don't think the red loctite is working, the oil contamination seems to prevent it working.
For future readers. The long side of the WW shouldered studs goes into the case, the short end is for the nuts. Don't make the same mistake I did! By sinking the long end of the studs until they wouldn't turn further, each stud was ~1cm extended out of the case which is correct. _________________ 1972 Super Beetle, Parked until adequate restoration funding is acquired in restoration!

Brake cleaner is your friend. I don't use anything on the studs. If they come out they come out. |
