Why did VW go to the larger hole and is there any advantage to modifying one's shroud to use the larger diameter boot? My shroud, which came on a 1974 412 engine has the larger hole and is what I have run for most all of the Type 4 miles I have driven. |

Morning Mike. I would stay with what ever boot was available. A solid connection not losing air would be better than a larger hole and inability to get a boot that fits. They can be a really bad fit if it is not the correct boot for the shroud. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

This one MAY work. If you buy one report back. It would be the larger one for the late 1800 and 2L motors. It is too big for the early shroud if it is truly a /D

for the record, when I faced this issue originally, I bought many boots from different suppliers. None fit. VW classic had one and I bought it and had it shipped from Germany. It fit like a glove. All the others went back along with notes what they did not fit. Some had the right part number and some had no part number. It was a real disappointment, and I stress each time the alternator comes off etc., because I do not have another one from VW.
With modern 3D scanning, and so many ways to make the right part, I have no idea why we have so much trouble getting a simple part like these.

I put a lot of time into researching these some years ago. There is NO control by the people making these parts so unless you find a NOS VW one, you may or may not have what you think you have. Literally I had to order and return about 15 of the 55 amp boots to find ones correctly labeled, and the ones that were correct were old stock from VW. My suggestion is find a 70 amp boot and modify the shroud to fit if need be, or make an adapter.

The general consensus is:
021-903-655 B small hole in fan housing, early T4 55A. Falls out of late engine shroud.
021-903-655 D big hole in fan housing such as late T4, GD, GE engines
022-903-655 70 Amp alternator
