1969 Bus
I’ve been having issues with the gear shifter popping out of the bowl on the front shift rod. When shifting from first to second it feels really sloppy, shifting into 3rd and I lose it. Pops completely out of the bowl. Took out the gear shift assembly and the bracket and lever have wear marks but doesn’t seem like enough to cause the issue. Should the guide pin have an angle like this? If not, how would I go about straightening it out?

somehow the dimensions on that bushing seem loose to my eye. Who did you buy the bushing from? Maybe Robbie, Gary or BusDaddy can look at it.

Your pin, and the plate it mounts to, is bent. Take the red angle and make it the green angle.

Thanks Robbie! You think I could just heat up the mounting plate and then smack the guide pin’s backing nut? Should I remove the front shift rod?

Dan, can I make a suggestion? California is a large place. Robbie is probably in California as Tom said he will be helping Tom with something. Why don't you put your City also in your avatar.

awesome. I think Robbie will go see Tom near San Luis Obispo. Maybe he will go thru Bakersfield and you can hook up with him.

Normally those brackets don't get bent but they do wear out and the pins sometimes break. My main concern about just grabbing it with a wrench and straightening it is if someone before you has been in there and it comes apart because of something they did or did not attach well. It probably is just spot welded to the floor or frame above it, but someone may have painted over it to hide their work (or lack there of). Inspect it carefully before and during any bending. Try not to put force on the pin itself. Maybe BusDaddy (Mark) may have come across this before and may have a suggestion.

Those guide pins can break (ask me how i know...)

If, in your bending and straightening, it all goes to hell, this thread will be very helpful:

**UPDATE**

I removed the front shift rod and applied some heat to the bracket holding the guide pin. With vice grips on both sides of the bracket, I applied even pressure until the guide pin was level. Greased and reassembled everything and now the bus shift smoother than it has since I owned the bus!
