great job- have inspired me to get the blue bus into the work area -now that grey whale is off on it's adventure. Look for ward to seeing the tent install- how did you secure the headliner- and- did you use any insulation under it or go straight to the FG roof? _________________ some days I get up and just sit and think. Hi William,
Good to hear my work has inspired you to work on your bus ☺️
I used a combination of resin and construction glue to install the headliner.
Didn't put in insulation, i have thought about it but decided to make IT like it was originally. |

I may put some bubble insulation up there and maybe cloth headliner as the plastic has completely disintegrated. Did get it engine back after about 1500 miles without any problems but a rusted muffler coming apart and the chinese elephant foot adjusters getting loose and not holding an adjustment.- so On with the show- post a travel series??? _________________ some days I get up and just sit and think. Small update, first coat of primer went on the poptop today.
Fortunately the outside didn't need as much work as the inside.
But still took me a while to get it nice.
Since i could not find proper replacement rollers for the X frames i decided to make my own.
Last week i got my first prototype.

Getting closer and closer to cutting the hole in the roof, i removed the headliner in the bus to have a look at what is there.
As you can see there are two roof supports, as far as i know the pieces of wood have to be mounted against the supports after cutting the hole.
But as you can see the wooden pieces are not usable so i'm gonna make new ones, but does anybody know if these are supposed to be the same length?
Any pictures of how it should look would be very appreciated ☺️

Slowly it's starting to look like something again
Anybody have some pictures of the chrome strip that holds the canvas on the front side of the poptop?
Just found out that i'm missing that part |

It's been a while so time for an update.
Finally, cutting the roof!
Placing the wooden pieces
Installing the springs
That's about where i'm at right now.
Next job is to install the luggage rack.
Also got a question for you guys, hope you can help.
Who can tell me the size of the mattress(es) that go inside the poptop?
I have one old torn piece, approximately 38,5" (98cm) by 50,5" (128,5cm), and 2" (5cm) thick.
Is this right?
And i guess there should be a second mattress, what size should that be? |

Hi folks,
I know this is an old post. Hopefully someone is still reading it ... I just did. I am moving my Riviera top from one bus to another. I have cut the hole and fitted the wood parts. I now realize that I don't know how to determine exactly where I should place the bottom metal bar of the scissor lift. How did you determine exactly what location to set the screws to? |

Hello Azceleste,
I am doing this conversion right now as well. I found this info in Chazz79's "Green Apple" thread. Link below;
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0
He says, "once you get the top up there leave the x-brace legs spread eagled and resting in the rain gutters. Attach the rear x-brace to the back of the wooden bed to keep it from flopping. After this point it becomes a one man opperation of wrestling it up to where it belongs. The aluminum angle that screws to the roof lines up with the raised roof line that's pressed into the roof skin @7.5 inches up the roof from the drip rail. The aluminum angle is 1 inch wide-thus the need to make your side cuts 8.5 inches up from the drip rail."
In other words, the bottom of the hinge should be as close to flush as possible with the wood frame, ending up 1" in from the frame. |

Thank you Everett, the Green Apple bus thread is fun and interesting. We woke up early this morning to beat the Phoenix heat and wrestled the top into place. It is now seated comfortably and flowing smoothly.

Didn't do much to the roof last week, but some nice new parts arrived 😎
Also a picture of the bars for the luggage rack, made them of aluminum.

Hi Bram, I'm new here and just got a riviera, can you tell me where you got the new hooks for the pop top?
Many thanks,

Damn! It's been a while since my last post....
Seems like finishing the roof conversion made me stop looking at this topic.
Well that, and maybe the corona pandemic, rebuilding our house myself, etc.
And probably making the decision to start a new hobby; beekeeping
Some advise, if you got some time left over, don't start beekeeping! You'll never have time left over again
Anyway, after i've installed the top we've had a couple nice camping trips with the family.
The top is really a great addition to our bus, since our 11 year old can sleep up top and our 8 year old can sleep in the hammock above the front seats. ( This will probably be the last year she fits in there)
Here are some pictures of the bus at a couple camping trips
Backyard camping
A very nice campground not to far from our home
And this is from our campingtrip to Germany, actually still at this campsite as i'm writing this

Very nice work! You need a Coleman high stand. Pictured in the background here:

That's nice! Thanks for the advice, I've never seen these before.
Normally I place the coleman stove on top of the removable kitchen cabinet, but i'm gonna have a look where this high stand is available. |
