Looking into a dash tach for my 68. I've seen the ISP and Smiths versions. It looks like Just Kampers also maybe sells the Smiths. Does anyone have knowledge if one is better than the other?
If you're running one please tell us which one you're running and your feedback on it.

I run the Smiths because I like 1-2-3-4 not 10-20-30-40.
Diodes are almost always mandatory for either.

And we use a standard VDO 2 inch tac and bored out the blanking plate to mount it. Much less elegant, but functional. _________________ Larry in OB

I have been running a Smiths for about 20K miles. The only issue I have is that sometimes when I shut off the bus the tach stays at 1,000. I switch to the ignition to the accessory position and the needle swings all the way to the right and back down to zero.
I don't like the double digits and the ISP logo on that unit. Also, the tach in the ISP ad is stuck at 250. |

BusBoys hasn’t been around since the Obama administration…
For the price of VDO plus adapter with shippings, you can have one that looks like VW put it there.
I think both are significantly brighter than stock. I used a ceramic resistor inline to mine tach’s backlight so it glows and dims along with the speedometer, but I can’t remember the wattage for the life of me.
In full disclosure, mine was one of the early or prototype Smiths that has a different movement. Less jerky and always rests at zero when the key is off. Do the ISP tachs stay at idle speed after shutdown like the newer Smiths?

I expected some feedback on both but there is definitely more to each than I thought. Thank you so much for the good feedback, and tips so far.
I have an under the dash mount tach now and I'm tired of leaning to the side to see it.
How is the movement on the modern Smiths? Is the movement when you rev smooth? |

My Smiths unit tracks smoothly. I have a Shockwave distributor and didn't install a diode. I used piggy back style connectors so I didn't need to cut or splice any wires.
