Well...
It finally sold
Goodings Christies Pebble Beach Auction.
https://www.goodingco.com/lot/1957-volkswagen-karmann-ghia-1/
$84,000
Originally offered by Hyman Motorcars Ltd. for $139,500. It was discussed in the "Example of Overpriced Ghias & Ghia Parts" topic.
I think most of us thought that price was a bridge too far.
I'm guessing Hyman wished they could turn back the clock and take the top BAT bid.
I have to believe that after that auction ended someone had to come back with an offer that exceeded the $84k Goodings sale.
It seem patience payed off for some lucky bidder.
I will never figure out valuations or dabble in the collector car market. I would lose my shirt! |

This just showed up on EBay for $19,900 or best offer.
It should be worth much more but unfortunately, many of the choices for restoration work are just not usually observed on Karmann Ghias. Such as using visible screws on door panels. Interior choices aren't great such as carpet quality and seat choices. The vents on the back passenger fender don't look appealing to me. We all have different taste, but this is too much. I would repaint the rims silver and go with either thin white walls or reg black tires. And put the underside of the chassis back to black. I'm not knocking the car just stating what would likely appeal to more people. _________________ Marc

Custom Ghias usually do pretty well on BaT, but you're right about this one. Why spend all that time and $$ on this car and then cheap out on the door cards & carpet and stick that cheesy console in there? And all that flashy chrome in the engine bay but no tarboard sound insulation or interior heating?
And above all else, why add those louvers to only one rear fender and paint the underside in body color
Different strokes and all...I get it...but these mods seem to have been done by someone who really doesn't understand these cars at all. _________________ '63 Ragtop (current)

If it's a car that they plan to keep fore ever, fine. But future sales prospects should have been considered with this restoration.
I'm not saying it was intentional, but I find it interesting that all the full length photos of the car are of the drivers side. There's not a single full length photo of the passenger side so that we could see how the appearance of the car as a whole is affected by the vents?? No pictures of the vents from the engine compartment either??? Just plenty of closeups. _________________ Marc

I have a major aversion to Ghias with matching body colour wheels, (unless they are black of course) but this car grossed out that aversion with the wide whites. It looked totally anaemic. Sorry. _________________ John.

Hahaha...to be honest it's the glaring colours that get me, the worst being light colours and bright red in particular. You get away fine...looks black to me anyway. _________________ John.

Very nice indeed...should attract some strong bidding.
Seller might want to correct the engine description though...that looks like a 1600 single-port, not an overhauled 1200 as stated. No mention of the 12V conversion either, although there's a shot of the usual door jamb sticker among the photos. Needs the trim put back in the windshield seal too... _________________ '63 Ragtop (current)

Attractive Ghia.
But... convertible top needs to be strongly compressed a few times; its sitting way too high when open. Windshield could use the original style chrome trim, to break up "all that black".
"Dog dish" hubcaps per description?
I agree about the engine not being a 1200 40 hp; with the 6 V regulator atop the generator, it could be a 1300, or indeed a larger bore. At least the engine has an original-style coil bracket instead of the "screaming '90's" style with the open slots for the mounting screws. |
