I have two different big nut pulleys. This is to go on a February 1955 USA Semaphore beetle. The original motor was no. 1- 983xxx but was missing when I found the car in 1979. I recently found a block 1-1000xxx late February or early March 1955 and have had it all rebuilt. Chassis no. 1-0 815 xxx. One pulley has the back part with about a 75 mm center section and a thin outer part. The other has a about a 56 mm center section with a heavier fatter outer piece. My question is which one goes on the car? If the thinner one with larger center then which generator belt do I use? The 9 x 905 belt seems to small but fits the pulley with the smaller center and fatter outer piece. I do have the thin crank pulley on the engine but can switch to later thicker crank pulley. Let me know.

Oddly enough, someone correct me if they know for sure -- is there also a 3 piece type-3 generator pulley with a 36mm nut? I have seen a couple of these at least. The pulley halves are slightly different, with the outer half being recessed 'deeper' than the usual 25hp flat pulley- but it does have a special 36mm nut and pulley 'hub'. The nut and hub have a different depth combination, so they can't be swapped with the 36hp version.
I've seen and bought a couple of these over the years, and been told they're type3, I'll see if I still have one. This picture is very close to what I'm talking about- the center 'snout' of the nut extends much deeper into the 'hub' if that makes sense. In this picture someone had a thick spacer to compensate for the mixup of the nut and hub I think.
The outer pulley half is recessed further- but the ones I've seen don't have the slots that this example does:

Everett,
Thanks for the reply. Would the pulley with the large center be a 25HP Pulley. Fits the exact center piece as the later pulley with the smaller center. Let me know.

I'm not sure what you mean by a large center.
Do you mean 3 pieces, like it has the larger center hole for the generator mounting piece?
Here's a late 54-55 pulley set up:

I'm a Type 3 guy and I have never heard of a pulley like that for a Type 3. |
Always Seemed like an odd/ suspicious thing for type3 to me too. I think I've purchased two pullies that were both advertised as 6V type3. One was pictured and looked proper on the type3 generator, and came complete with the big 36mm nut.
The other didn't come with the nut, but the same pulley- and the nut was in fact different inside the bore. Compare that ^ picture of the back of the nut to one you have laying around, and you'll see there's a difference; the center cone thing extends to the lip of the nut, it should be shorter.? The pulley itself does look like the later 3 piece design, where it's not as flat.
Maybe Porsche did an update at some point-? since they used that pulley into the 60's, while VW phased it out 10 years earlier? _________________

Everett,
I mean the raised area on the back piece that the thin front piece sits on.

Everett,
Thanks for the info. The larger center pulley must belong to a Porsche, correct?
