I kept hearing we had coyotes here in Maryland. Rumor is they were introduced to the Army proving grounds to control the deer population. And now their expanding off the base. I’ve never seen one, until the other day. I was watching the stream in the back of my property and I heard something moving. I looked and it was a coyote, real close, like 20 yards or less. He looked at me and ran away. Nice big guy, too. Is it strange to see one during the day?

Not in my neighborhood. I live in a more urban area of Portland. I usually see them at dusk. I saw one in my back yard 8am in the morning. My wife just chased one off the other day. A few years ago I saw one so tall it reminded me of a wolf. That was crazy. I only see them a few times a year.

For perspective of the neighborhood they roam around in my neighborhood

Canis latrans is crepuscular , so daytime sighting isn’t unusual.

I see 'em dead along the road from here to Pennsylvania. It wouldn't surprise me to see live ones in Maryland.

Oh ya! Once a population gets established you will see them lots even in the day. This is especially true in the late winter breeding season and late spring/early summer when the pressure to feed the pups is intense. We hear them nearly every night, tracks in the yard at least once a week and any time of the day they can bee seen hanging out with the cows hoping for the cows to kick up mice and gophers.

We are backed up to open space and typically see them just before dawn. After a dry winter we see them in the neighborhood more often ... not as much prey available in the open space acreage. Our neighbors have lost a few cats and small dogs from such incursions. And if they corner some unfortunate creature in the middle of the night they yelp up a storm. Have woken me up more than once. Sirens get them going any time day or night.

Why would the Army want to introduce Coyotes?

Yotes have been east of the Mississippi for a long time.

Not a long time in Maryland. But a lot of speculation, nonsense, and fake news (as the kids say) they hang out there now.

It took a long time because they had to catch each one and add an “e” to their name

How in the hell do Coyotes get into your backyard?
That thing looks like Fort Knocks.

We have Coyotes here in my burg. I see um from time to time both day and night. It's really IMO odd to see them at all considering I live in the heart of this little burg.

They are an opportunistic & invasive species, and are spreading at least in part because they can successfully survive and even thrive in developed areas, unlike many other wild animals. I’ve increasingly seen them in many places over the years. Foxes too.

On our farm in Oregon City (which also had riverfront fields down on the Clackamas) we saw them quite often. If we didn't see them, we'd hear them when the sirens from emergency vehicles across the river on Hwy 224 would set them off, and they'd sing along until the siren was out of range.

The horses and cattle really never batted an eye at them (lots of small creatures for them to eat and didn't have to go after the big ones). But get a cougar on the farm, and all livestock went a bit snorty and wild eyed.

About the funniest encounter I ever had was in the middle of the night at our back door. We had noticed a chicken go missing, not 100% sure of the cause but about a day later the dog and a coyote woke me up. I flicked on the back light and there they were, nose to nose arguing. Off to the side about 15 feet away from the pair was a skunk who had found the dead chicken and was casually enjoying it with not a care in the world!

I just shut the light off and went back to bed. Things were nicely in balance, why interfere? You don't start blasting away with a skunk under the bedroom window....

We had a mountain lion sighting near me. I pack a gun at night when taking a walk at night . I dont like any animal that sees people as dinner.
