I have just installer a new harness from Wolfsburg West and am confused about the turn signal wiring. I have two wires coming from the lever that don’t appear on the wiring diagram.

just my guess , i duno but there were some after market turn signal/semaphore switches that light up on the end of the lever so you KNOW your semaphore are UP ...... it looks like someone added the wires up the arm but your not showing the end ? what is there ??? is there a light or switch there ?

the bottom of yours look to have been made for wires ??

OK this looks like what you have , high beam low beam switch for 2 years only , something like that .

MAYBE someone put a year later switch in your bug so that doesnt show in your schematic pic as original ? something like that .

Thanks…..no light or button but it makes sense. My high / low beam is a foot prdal button. The previous owner had done a lot of specials with the wiring

Colors seem to indicate for a dimmer relay.

The wires don't belong on a normal US spec '65, but were likely an option for a '65. It looks like the wires for a dimmer switch that mounted to the back of the turn signal lever. Well, that switch was just a set of contacts to control the ground signal for a high/low dimmer relay.

Starting in '66 the use of a dimmer relay and those contacts became standard on US spec Bugs. From '65 down the floor mounted dimmer switch was standard. They should be extra for your car, able to be disconnected at the other end and removed.

just an observation . thats quite a gap between the turn signal housing and the steering wheel . it should be a lot closer to the steering wheel . BUT it may have something to do with the mismatched switch i duno . but id loosen it up n see if you can push it forward n leave about a credit card gap there .

The color code: Solid brown is the wire connected to ground. The brown wire is the switched ground that connects to S on the headlight dimmer relay Cool

Just an FYI, I found a kit in the Samba classifieds to convert my '65 turn signal lever to the '66 style with the high beam switch on the lever. The '65 lever is designed to accept the kit.

Thru the "Technical" button up on the right of this screen you are reading from right now.

Scroll down to the "Technical Bulletins", left click on that.

Go into the "Series (section) E", then scroll down to #16.

Lots of other super cool VW stuff there, dig around and have fun!!

I remember using that bulletin when I installed the kit. I also remember what a challenge it was installing those very tiny screws on the stalk without removing the lever from the steering column! And you are right...lots of other cool stuff there!

I made that change on my '65. I much prefer the lever switch to the foot switch. You can sire the relay to give you a "flash to pass" function, too.

Then you can repurpose the foot switch to act as an ignition kill switch. Hidden in plain sight! A decent theft-delayer.

I have the flash to pass function, but I don't think I've ever passed anyone! Wink

Mostly use mine to signal 'go ahead' to other drivers. No sense having them behind me flashing their headlights to pass me. Cool
