Is it aesthetics or ass- thetics?

The original discussion was exposed engine as per buggies, Bajas and rat rods or put a lid on it as Wolfsburg intended it?

Our local supermarket used to display Hot VWs with their assortment of magazines. You seen one old VW, you seen 'em all although the old old old ones have an organic aesthetic conspicuously absent from the the new Corvette. You know what I mean. Son of Pontiac Aztek.

(Years ago) I stopped in my tracks when I saw the prototypical flat black VW rat rod on the cover of HVWs, Kelsey Hayes wire wheels. Big 'n' little bias plies. Forged Ford I beam front end on a custom extender.

Suddenly a look I had in the back of my mind came into focus. '32 Ford hot rod meets old VW.

Clearly I'm not in the minority on this. Every embarrassing J.C. Whitney "street Baja" had been treated to a beam extender and a coat of flat black paint by now.

Don't be judgemental, every ugly person has a mother that loves them.

And Ugly is in the eye of the beholder.

Does the engineering and design answer the problem posed with an Elegant solution?

The car in question was a vintage full bodied cabriolet. Leave it full bodied I say, they are lovely looking old ladies and deserve the dignity of being fully dressed.

If it's a Baja, sand rail, glass body Buggy or rat rod... let it all hang out. Nobody expects those to look pretty with their skirts hitched up and bare asp showing.

My sand rail looks like a collection of well used mismatched parts and badly bent pipe from any angle. I make no apologies for it. It is purely functional, if anyone wants to see pretty they will have to go somewhere else.

My street Buggy has it's stock-ish type 4 engine painted all black to try and disguise it. It's butt ugly and I know it so look at the rest of the car please! It works too, very few people spend any time looking at the rear view. Only those that know these engines take the time to look and ask. I like that.
