I'm working on my '63 front bearings. I really don't like the cumbersome hex nuts that go onto the spindle along with the locking plate. Can these be replaced with the modern locking nuts that are tightened with the allen key ?

Consider getting chromoly rather than aluminum.

One source:

Less expensive elsewhere.

Keep in mind that later Bugs came factory with these Allen bolt locking nuts, BUT later Bugs also had a larger diameter thread on the spindle nose. So stock Allen bolt locking nuts for late Bug will NOT fit early Bugs. Aftermarket can be had however.
