I have a 1 7/8" tow bar and I also have a 2" tow bar. It just depends on what brand you have.

My bug shop had both 1 7/8 and 2 inch towbars. I bought the 2 inch because my boat trailer uses the 2 inch ball.

Don't quite understand the question.

Are YOU towing,

or being towed?

Either way it will depend on the equipment being used. Not all that expensive to get both balls.

the ball size should be stamped on the top flat section of the hitch (tow vehicle) end of the tow bar.

You know why cowboys can tow each others trailers. It's because they all have the same size balls. Rolling Eyes

I purchased a tow bar second hand. I'm not sure whether it requires a 2" or 1 7/8" ball. It does not say on the tow bar. I can get it to latch on my 2" bar. It's snug but does rotate with some resistance. Not sure if I should be using a 1 7/8". I don't want to be unsafe. Any way to tell?

I bought a tow bar new back in 1986 to tow my 1970, that uses a 1 7/8" ball. But I read in catalogs like JBugs that the ones they sell (JBugs does NOT make parts) uses a 2" ball.

If your tow bar fits on a 2" ball, I think I'd use that.

I do understand about no stamping or label on your tow bar to indicate what size tow ball to use. Mrs. Cusser bought a used horse trailer a decade ago, and assumed that it would use the same 2" ball her old trailer used. Guess what - that trailer needed a 2 5/8" ball, she only found out when she took the trailer somewhere for a repair. No label or stamping on that horse trailer, and I looked online at their owner's manual and it didn't state what size either !!!

If you can't close the ball lever, then a 2" ball is not the correct size.

My tow bar is 17/8". I never have any issues using it towing my bugs anywhere.

A very good friend of mine towed a 1 7/8 inch hitch on a two inch ball, wrapped in 10 wraps of chain. She doesnโ€™t recommend this if you are a Nancy

This is a problem! Not all hitches are labeled. I bought a cargo trailer that was not and thought it took a 2", towed it on several trips with a 2" ball. All seemed fine until one day the stars lined up and the hitch popped off the ball on the highway. Fortunately I had been taught to use short crossed safety chains by an old trucker so the trailer just settled down into the cradle made by the safety chains and all came to a smooth uneventful stop.

I have 2 tow bars and 2 smaller trailers with 1 7/8", a flat deck tandem axle with 2" and a cargo trailer with 2 5/8". Total pain to keep changing back and forth! To complicate matters balls are available with different sized shanks so swapping balls can get annoying too.

You can fit a 2 โ€œ receiver over a Eu 52 mm ball using a 3/2.2 kg hammer

This one only works if your tow vehicle's receiver is at a standard height and you don't need to raise or lower the ball to get the trailer or tow bar level.
