I've been trying to tighten up the driver's side mirror because it tends to fold in at highway speeds.

All that is actually adjustable is the top acorn nut. No matter how much I tighten it, the mirror is never locked into place and eventually folds in.

Is there another adjustment I'm not seeing?

When I removed the mirror assembly from the hinge, I don't see any way to take anything apart so I can add a washer just under the acorn nut.

What am I missing?

When you take it apart there should be a spring in there. Tightening the acorn nut tightens the mirror by compressing the spring. Is it missing? Sorry I think I mixed it up with the later mirror which has a spring. I will take a look tomorrow for you, in the meantime maybe someone else will weigh in on this.

Doing this, plus...while it's apart take the edge of a file and 'drag' it down the side of the tapered part. This adds serrations that help 'grip' the mirror. It does such a good job of holding the mirror in place you need to have it positioned where you want it before tightening the nut because it will be hard to move after that without loosening the nut.

I don't know which one of those mine is because I can't take mine apart once I get it off the door hinge mount.

Here is mine:

Once I get it off the door mount, I have put a wrench around the slots on the wide bottom part and another on the acorn nut. Regardless of which way I turn either nut, it never tightens around the mirror stem.

When I do this on the car it - screw the mirror all the way down til tight, using the acorn nut, hold it with the wrench, and turn the bottom part clockwise (looking up), attempting to squeeze the mirror stem, and it never tightens up. In fact, the whole mirror backs off the screw, even thought the acorn nut is not moving in the wrench, and I just used it to tighten the mount onto the door hinge. Off the car, when I look at the threads at the bottom of the mount, they move with the acorn nut. So why does the mirror come up the door hinge when the acorn nut is not moving but the large 'mount-nut' is turned?

What is the sequence with these two nuts to get the mirror to snug up?

i duno just trying to help .i THINK that washer might be keeping it from snugging down inside , that changes everything . it keeping the mirror from going down to where it supposed to be on the brass bushing part inside , is my guess . ditch the washer n try again ... you have a round mirror .

to me it looks like ya you tightened it BUT with that washer the mirror base nut does not go down on the brass where its suposed to snug , you snugged the nut but not on the brass , now its too long inside . you follow me ? so your mirror just spins on a pin . as you have no adjustment the way it is .

with the mirror n washer removed -now snug down the lower base nut tight over the brass till its good n snug n firms up the brass , then add the mirror n acorn n snug it . i have monkeyed with a lot of these mirrors .

i dont tighten the acorn too tight so when it gets bumped it can move not brake the arm . i bump into it it more than you might think , at 70 years old LOL

I just tried it without the washer and it does snug up a bit better, but there seems to be a 'sweet' spot, and if you pass it, it loosens up a bit again.

Thank you for the suggestion, my3bugs, it has helped.

washer

Maybe try a serrated washer, like what's on the CV joint bolts.

I had the same problem with my cheap after market mirror. Been a couple months now with out problems. My fix was to rough up the short tapper which goes down into the hinge, I believe the hinge is wore. Any way tightened down the big nut with 2 flats real tight. While I had it a part I also roughed up the long taper as well and installed the mirror. I actually had to loosen the small nut to adjust the mirror, then retighten. Good luck I feel your frustration.
