Here is my 1964 notchback in Sahara beige notch straight out the barn, it was sleeping next to a 74 ghia and a type 34. guy said he had 15 or so at some time. anyway lot of plans are being hashed out right now. hasnt been on the road since 84, no papers just a bill of sale and i am in central jersey so dmv has been lets say a lot of crazy steps to pull a title.
I just wanted to get this up so i could get some help with issues. trying to get the body up but had to get the front quarters patched and rebuilt in spots. also trying to figure what to do about suspension (thinking of swing to IRS and bagging it). then theres pan work, and engine.

If it was me and I have just "finished" my 64 Notch a year ago. I would say....
Don't focus on the engine and transmission yet. Take care of the body and frame first. I can see prior patches in some of the usual spots. But, that area in the front inner fender is neither easy and simple. The visible rust in the picture indicates much more work. If you get the core bits of the frame and body fixed, you will have a solid piece to set whatever engine/transaxle you like. And you may find, there is far more work than you imagined. (I did)
The replacement of swing to IRS requires you to change the subframe as well along with other bits. It can be done. And many have done it. But, you might be just as happy leaving it swing and install a camber compensator for far less work
It may be easy in your mind to choose the mechanicals of Engine and Transmission swap initially. But, if the rest of the car is falling apart due to rust sag, the end result will not be pretty. And I don't mean patina.
If you do decide to choose the engine/trans swap, keep in mind there are many who would be interested in buying the original engine and swingaxle. There are many who want original correct engines and transaxles. _________________ Ossipon

I've been able to put some time into this and I'm definitely working hard at curing the cancer. I have a good friend who is a maestro at the tig welder. I've been preparing the patches and he comes over and welds them in. Should have the front quarters patched this week then it's going to get sand blasted and sealed. Wanted to get them done because those points at the tops are such a bear to get right!

Next issue is the wheel we'll area where the bumper mounts! Isp has them listed for 68 and on but that's it.
Wonder if I can put those on and just re drill some bolt holes on the 64 bumper brackets. I have a call into them now, ....they are going to get back to me.

That was what mine looked like as well. I used the ISP mounts for one front and both back. On my 64 they are the same mounting bracket. The bigger issue is building solid metal to mount the brackets. My front apron was paper thin. I ended up buying a replacement front apron piece that included the mickey mouse horn front.
My before and after I admit I am not the best welder (Slop)

I agree 100%. Get the cancer cut out and repaired first. Having a nice solid foundation to build off of is more important at this time. It looks like your car is mostly complete, so you won't need much from ISP West.
Swapping to IRS requires either an IRS rear sub-frame, or adding in the brackets to convert the swing axle sub to IRS (a lot of work, and a jig to locate the brackets to weld in). I went with an IRS sub when I converted mine (my 65 Notch w/factory sunroof), but you also need to use an engine case that has the IRS engine hanger mount bosses cast into it (universal case, or late t-3 case), as you'll need to hang the rear of the engine some how (you won't have the forks to hold the engine up). Then you'll need the body side brackets to hold the ends of the hanger bar. A donor parts car would be very helpful at this point.
I thought you mentioned finding/getting a late donor car. I'd pick it up for parts needed to do the IRS conversion (cheaper than buying the parts separately). If the body on it is in good shape where your Notch is bad, some of those parts can be used to fix the Notch. The curved pieces behind the front tires can be made as patch panels (yours are gone), even if they need fixing themselves. They're not reproduced, or available as new. I've faked them before, but it's a lot of cutting, welding and grinding to get the shape right. The pan bolts up to them too. As for pan rust, you might want to look into getting a pair of Gerson floor pans, as they'll fix a lot of rust in one shot (each side). Since you're in New Jersey, you might want to contact MonkeyNut (he's in North Carolina) to save on shipping costs. I think he's got an ad in the classifieds, and used to have a banner ad at the top of the forum page. Keep in mind that you really want a type 3 trans, if not the type 3 only hockey stick (that actually shifts the gears in the trans). I only mention it, as the type 1 hockey stick doesn't have the divot on the bottom that a type 3 uses, and the reproduction versions have the bottom divot in the wrong place. I hope this helps. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Take it to a radiator shop and have them boil it out. That'll get rid of the old gas and if you're lucky get rid of the rust inside it. Did the car have a gas heater in it? Just asking as the gas cap looks red.
You might try ISP West for some bumper mounts. On your car rears are the same as the fronts. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

| All good stuff as usual bob. I just saw a 72 square nearby with no engine. Cleaned out the tank with heavy duty cleaner and a peice of chain to rattle around in there. Soaking in white vinegar for a day. I'll see what she looks like after that. Radiator shop for a boil out??? |

Looks like an early type3 case. The oil pressure boss is undrilled/tapped, and 6mm oil pump studs _________________ Jack Staggs

Looks like maybe a t-3 mirror, a headlight, a tail light lense, and some bug parts, and an unknown bare engine case, w/6mm studs (small oil ports). Can't tell much more without seeing the oil pump end. Also a t-3 clock, and maybe some goodies in the bucket.
If the case has the engine number stamped on a boss near where the oil cooler mounts, then you have a type 3 case and can look up the number to see if it matches the car. But, since you want to put IRS under it, and bag it, it's not really worth anything, except to someone possibly looking for one (it's not IRS compatible). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

It's a TO case 66 to 73 1600. But looking at it, it's a 66-68 case since it doesn't have the bosses for the engine hanger cast into it (used from 69-73).
You'll probably spend more than you want to, to rebuild it as it'll need some machining due to the way it was stored. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
