That's the good and bad thing about EFI... It's usually not the computers fault.
Computers are dumb.... they only do what the input tells them to do. _________________

We're attempting a stealth EFI conversion on a 1972 BMW 2002 (gutted dual side draft Webers for throttle bodies; SDS injector bosses welded on the underside of the intake manifold; ECU under the rear seat; pressure manifold and gauge concealed by an empty battery case in the stock location under the hood (battery is in trunk) etc.
If this doesn't work, I'll have an SDS EM-4F ecu and a single port VW single port 1600 in a Meyers Manx clone project this spring.
SDS is used regularly in VW powered home built aircraft, but they tend to run at constant throttle.
Has anyone used SDS on a VW aircooled engine on the street? One injector per cylinder or for two cylinders?
I'm visualizing SDS injector bosses welded onto the intake manifolds as close to the cylinder head as possible and some form of a gutted downdraft single barrel carb (automotive such as Weber/Solex/Kadron or motorcycle) as a throttle bodfy (plus all the attendant conversion stuff).
I figure we can get it running irrepsective of the number of injectors, but I am concerned about driveabllity (the same reason our BMW project might not work).
Advice would be much appreciated. Thanks. |

Minor update: IF we end up with the SDS being surplus and decide to have a crack at converting the 1600 to EFI, then I'll buy a Kadron throttle body (the thing with the butterfly in it); figure out a way to attach an aircleaner to the throttle body, and use spacers to obtain whatever spacing is required from butterfly to intake, as needed by the injector location. Which will have to be determined.
And - on other topics - we will be rebuilding a Meyers Manx replica in the Spring, and I've got a pair of Miata seats (nice and narrow to fit; also designed to have speakers in the headrest). I understand that the Miata systems needs additional speakers; has anyone installed these seats with their headrest speakers in a dune buggy? and did you use/need additional speakers? thanks, Doug |

Ran a SDS EM4 for a few decades before recently upgrading to the EM5.
Solid units. |
