I put the tan synthetic carpet kit from Wolfsburg West in the 66 Java Green a few years ago, my other 66 Java Green has the original Oatmeal square weave. It is close enough to the eye for me, the synthetic tan is a little rougher to the touch.
Here is the synthetic:

And the original Oatmeal square weave.

Not that it matters, but those originals don’t look like original carpets to me, they look like really old aftermarket synthetic loop…?

I had the same thought at first glance the carpet over the heater channel seemed to have too large of a loop for original square weave.

Take a small thread and take a match to it. You'll soon see if it is synthetic or wool.

What I did was having the rims sandblasted and powder coated in gloss black and have first painted the inner portion and after drying the outer. I masked with flexible tape.
I had not an exact match to the colours, but for me it was enough.

Thank you for the tip. The last time I checked, Temple had shut down and was no longer doing paint matches!! Bummer.

I drove the beetle to work at the airport tonight, and man what a night I picked! Earlier today I wiped all the windows inside and out with windex and did a quickie clean on the wiper blade edges anticipating some rain. Boy am I glad I did! We have a slow moving front dropping a good amount of rain over the area. Even with clean windows and a fancy rain coating on the glass, those wipers were about as helpful as vaseline on a squeegee. It was terrible!

But the car ran great. She was due a mini fall tuneup today, bumping the idle up half a turn and resetting the choke. She made good heat, enough to turn it down while driving!

However. I did notice on a slick, sharp curve on the Memphis surface roads, I had what felt like some heavy understeer... it felt as if the front of the car didn't want to come over in the direction I was steering, and I was hesitant to let the throttle up and induce some other issues. Although toe in is right, I think my overall geometry is off, front and rear. It could really use a pro alignment shop to really get everything zeroed out.

Indeed, congratulations! I also have enjoyed following your progress. I’ve learned a lot from this thread, and have kind of shaped the goals for my 67 based on what you’ve done with yours. Very Happy

For the first time in at least thirteen years, I found an aircooled beetle at one of our local Memphis junkyards!! They have a rotted out blue 1974 standard beetle. I knew it wouldn't have much I could use but it was certainly worth the trip.
I've been sober from social media for one year now, and along with it I also tossed out the ol' smart phone. So when I packed my toolbag for the junkyard, I threw in my old 5Dmk2 camera with a 50mm lens.... but forgot to 2x check the memory card. It was so cool walking down the rows and spotting the beetle! When I got to it and started to take some photos, my 5D flashed a couple of error messages and ultimately had a bad CF card that wouldn't even format in the camera. No photos from the junkyard now!

The beetle was rough, but mostly all there. Even the bone stock 1974 engine and accessories! It has a federal emissions EGR, stock 34pict carb, and what looks like a stock SVA/SVDA distributor. They were all too seized and corroded to really be worth the time of removing them, but I retrieved a handful of parts that made it worth the trip.

Got me a shepard's crook!

Here's the whole stash, including the air cleaner box I'm repurposing as an intake filter for my 33-gal Craftsman air compressor.

The next most favorite is the pair of rear seat heater outlet flaps. One side's missing on my car.. but not for long!

And third favorite is a set of threadbare aftermarket carpets.

Yeah, crummy thin aftermarket carpet! I love it. I love the heel wear marks on both sides. I'll put these up and rock them until I decide to spend the coin on a real OE-equivalent set.

My lil' lady was out here helping too!

And an engine bay shot, showing off that nifty vac advance hard line which I'm reasonably certain I've installed right.

Robert I hope you post pictures of the intake setup for your air compressor using the 74 air cleaner-that sounds interesting. I found a 70 bug in the pick and pull in va beach about 6 months ago(it was not listed in their online inventory). I pulled a complete set of 1/4 pop outs with all the weatherstrip and hardware. It still had the 1 year only bolt on rear bumper reflectors which I later regretted not taking.

I couldn't stand it, knowing there was a beetle in harvestable condition in the junkyard and not getting more parts from it!!
Today I went back with my oldest, and unfortunately they wouldn't let him on the yard due to age restrictions, so I tried to hurry getting parts off the car.
Loaded camera in hand, I hastily jostled to row 112 with a full toolbag and some spare batteries for the recip saw.
Here it is! A 1974 Volkswagen Beetle GT. Yeah I know, not popular to post "fat chicks" in the pre-'68 side, but it's good to see vintage steel resting in the junkyards regardless of echelon!!
And yes, the junkyard parked the new beetle beside it on purpose! Laughing

I really enjoyed rebuilding my front axle (except stripping the paint and rust, hated that) and settled on getting this car's axle out to rebuild and sell. Gotta finance the hobby! Laughing The junkyard sold it to me complete drum-to-drum. I'm looking forward to rebuilding it and selling someone a high quality beam that I'd want in my own car.. that quality is hard to find.

The spare tire floor of my '67 beetle needs replaced; although the rest of the clip is a little different on the '74 here, the piece I need is the same. I cut the clip off, but if I can find someone who needs it, I'd rather weld in a new DKB-made spare tire floor panel instead of cutting up the entire OE clip for that one stamping. If anyone is looking for a good dry clip with no impact damage, this is what you want!

Nice work, I have always enjoyed finding old cars in the junkyards and pulling odd things off of them. I think that 74 may have a german SVDA dizzy in it. Some 74s had it and some had the dvda and I could not see it well enough in the pictures. Someone will want those parts for sure.

The distributor did indeed look like a stock SVDA. I thought this year range had DVDAs to go with emissions standards. I'm pretty sure it was stock German; everything was pretty well accounted for on the rest of the motor as stock/original. The distributor and carb were both pretty crusty and didn't seem worth the time as cores, so when the distributor wouldn't come up out of the clamp, I moved on!
The guys at the yard told me someone asked to buy the entire car as-is and they wouldn't do it! They have a policy against selling complete cars. So regardless of what I take off this car, it's going to get squashed and sent to the foundry. The lower 4" needed a lot of work in all the usual places. I think the chassis may have needed some significant structural work too.

This is another shot of the engine bay, I didn't get a close up of the engine.

Is the whole rear end being supported by those wheels under the fenders?!
