Yes, it needs to be angled!!! 14 foot 4 inch Lettmann kayak, circa 1970s in a Vanagon.

Traveled over 3000 miles paddling in the kayak last year.

For short trips we just opened the '59's sunroof and stuck the rear on the backseat, couple of bungee cords on the front.
That was before we had a bus.

10 footer, fits perfectly when I slip it in sideways and tuck it between the front seats!

Funny thing happened today at the Port. I got back to my Van, loaded my boat, then got a phone call from the police, asking if I own a Blue Vanagon, and if it was at the Port parking lot. . I said, yes, I am standing next to it.
Turns out someone saw me Van there this morning, and had seen it there yesterday too. They called the police to let them know that they thought it may have been there over night, and was concerned I was missing, shipwrecked or drowned or such.
Nice to have a concerned citizen call in. I assured the police that I was ok, that I had boated two days in a row (I row after all hahahahaha) and had parked in the same spot both days.

I see a bit of rust on the lip to the hatch opening. If you kayak in salt water, i always advise to rinse or at the very least dry off any salt water before loading in or on a vehicle.
A friend of mines son had a late model Subaru, he'd load his yak on the roof after salt water yaking, then drive over the boat wash faucet and hosed off his yak AFTER it was on his cars roof. Problem is that salty rinse water ran all over his car, it soaked into the rain gutters, windshield trim, cowling, etc... Basically it became a salt bath. Within about a year or two he had major rust bubbling along the top of his windshield trim on his roof!!!! He only did this maybe a dozen time, washing off his boat while it was on his roof of car, and it destroyed his roof at top of windshield.

So always NEVER put a salty boat on your roof, dont rinse a salty boat while it is on the roof either, as the salty rinse water will get into all the nooks and crannies, and be very difficult to remove.
Rust, UGH!!!!

Beware of salty gear like wetsuits, spray skirts, towels and such inside your van too. Put them in a water proof pail or plastic bin so your floors dont get salty!!!

Yes I built it during Covid. I started out with an electric Epropulsion outboard and then switched it to a 20hp Suzuki. I’ve lost interest in the boat, didn’t put it in the water once this year.

From Home Depot in the vent section for houses , some mods and very effective and cheap . I had to add a small strip of plastic on the bottom with pop rivets ,note it slides right in and out and has never come loose but I remove Them When It Gets Cold Outside For The Season.Water does not get in . You need to push the slider up against it to keep it tight no problem good luck.
Paint as desired.
sorry for the late reply. Not to good at using the site correctly
