Hey,

I have a 65 that was built in "I think" June of 65. When I look at The Samba color charts for 65 (or any year for that matter) the closest color I can find is L 289 Blue - White which doesn't look accurate even when comparing to inside paint samples.

Can anyone look at this picture of my beetle and confirm this?

Does anyone know where I can get either this color or a color match in a rattle can format once I figure out the color?

This is a pretty solid original paint survivor but I'd like to fix some of the rust and get the right color (parcel tray and inside front apron area). Thanks!

Did you find the list of 8 colors that Sedans were painted in for model year 1965? Bahama Blue is the only light blue color (convertibles also had Pacific Blue but that's a bit darker)

Photos of paint samples are never that great, very dependent on lighting, camera and monitor settings and the sample itself. But armed with the name of the color you can search the Gallery:

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_search.php?search_keywords=bahama&search_terms=all&

And see if any of the photos that come up look much like your car.

Sure looks like Bahama Blue.

Blue-white would be the correct color for the wheel rims.

Search the classifieds for Temple Paints. They mix and pack correct paints in spray cans.

That finish looks to have faded a bit over the years, so unless you're wanting to paint the whole car, just ordering paint by the code might not get you the best match. Find an auto body/paint supply place that can 'read' the exact color of the car as it is now and mix up a rattle can to match. If it's not possible for them to see the whole car, maybe you could bring in a part like the license plate light housing to take a reading from.

Hit it with some rubbing compound, polish, the wax. It will bring the vibrancy of the color back. Pretty sure it will become obvious then that it’s Bahama blue. Fits the color options for that year. One of my favorite colors. Not sure why you don’t see a lot of them in this color.

Thanks everyone. Super helpful information.

I'll go get some paint in Bahama Blue. The paint match will just be used for inside post rust repair to the A pillar, etc. For the outside I'll wet sand and bump out some dents and that is it! It doesn't need any paint on the outside just the sand and polish hopefully and I'll have a pretty clean patina driver...

Sounds like a good plan. They're only original once. Very Happy

I’d use a red compound before trying sanding. It’s less aggressive and won’t remove as much paint. It works slower if that makes sense more controlled.

Good advice. I've already got too excited when I brought it home. Hit it too hard with the pressure washer, hit some spots with 000 steel wool. I was just way too happy to have found it. Now I'm chilling out and will take that advice to save the paint I've got!

I just went out to the garage and did a quick and dirty red compound and just wax. I didn’t have any polishing compound so I did skip a step. Plus it was only 38 degrees in the garage. So did everything wrong but it will give you an idea.

Plus these pictures are low definition to download. It’s looks better in the pictures on my phone. I used turtle wax red compound. Be careful if you use a polisher go on low speed and pressure. It will burn through paint. The I used Chemical Guys butter wax. This looks better the more times you use it.

Tried to show a straight line of only soapy wash and quick compound and wax.

That looks really nice. I'm going to do it all manual bc I know I'd go crazy with a power tool. The roof is pretty rough and much of the paint is gone but everything else has some pretty thick paint I'd say. It was looking really nice using 1500 wet sand but like you said that is taking off too much paint for no benefit....
