Hello all - newbie here and I apologize in advance for any incorrect terminology. My First posting but a guarantee there will be more
My new to me 65 type 1. Has what I believe are the factory mounts for a steering stabilizer - but it’s missing…. Any chance there is a list or an exploded diagram with the part numbers for the bushings and bolts/nutz/sizes and keepers etc.
I know that I have a lot else to do with steering box and ends and wheel bearings and new tires etc. but I wanted to start gathering the hardware so that I can install the stabilizer when it’s time- I can see a “Gabriel” (prolly china) brand part available a few places - unless there is a better one
Thanks in advance |

And classified ad search...
Sway Bar....
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/search.php...ton=Search
You can see a stock bushing and clamp set in the for sale items, that is what they look like.
the metal clamp holds the bushing, it is a springy steel clamps that gets co pressed around three sides of the bushing, then a smaller clamp is installed to retain it. big channel lock pliers or vice grips with a hammer to drive on the smaller lower clamp piece can be used for the assembly of the clamps around the rubber bushes.
Photo from ad of stock clamps....
NOTE THE SMALLER LOWER CLAMP PIECE FOR EACH IS NOT SHOWN, but you can see this piece in both my prior photo and diagram taken from the repair manual.
Note that some aftermarket sway bars are stiffer than stock, larger diameter, so they need bushings with larger diameter holes in which the bar is held. _________________ Sorry About That Chief.

Are you referring toa stabilizer bar as in a sway bar or stabilizer shock as in a steering damper? Since you mentioned Gabriel brand I assume you're referring to the damper.
Search for steering "damper" instead of stabilizer. They're probably all about the same quality. If the bushing in the tie-rod is bad, you can find them on e-bay cheap.

| I am looking at the damper parts- I just wanted to make sure from a parts standpoint that there were no unique parts at the connection points - I am “seeing” some sort of a locking/bending plate that seems to be needed and am still trying to figure out the proper orientation and connection hardware —- it’s really easy when you have “one” (of anything) to pull out or replace - but when stuff is missing it’s kinda hard to see what all you need to put it it back in normal order. |

I can get some pics of my 63 when I get home because the tank is currently out & i just installed a new damper. If there is anything specific that you need a pic of or measured let me know. If you PM me your phone number it would be easier for me to text you the pics than to upload & post them here. |
