If the valves are sticking I wonder about the rings. It might not be a bad thing to put a bit of your favorite weasel pee in the sparkplug holes and let it soak for a few days. A few drops on each valve stem too perhaps while the covers are off. _________________ Our cars get old, we get old but driving an old VW never gets old! |

Absolutely.
I capped this back up for now because it’s too cold to repaint the valve covers and engine tin.
Nonetheless, The ceremonial scrubbing of the tin happened yesterday, but I only did two pieces.
I scrubbed these in water and washing soda with a stiff nylon bristle brush.
There is a bit of ancient grease inside this did not remove.
I think I’m going to hit these with lacquer thinner, because they are covered with a layer of cheap barbecue paint over dirt over the original factory paint, and in person it looks like a disaster. _________________ SS100 kit kar

This muffler was never really straight from the factory. It is also too close to the body. I cut it loose and removed about 1” from the tubes.
I’m also trying to get it more level.
The tubes don’t all line up well. I will probably need to heat one tube and bend it. I might try cold-bending it first.

Cold bending worked fine. It fits better than before.
But I had a stripped exhaust stud. It snapped when I tried to remove it.
I drilled it out, and as a matter of formality I got out my best number three easy out. It’s a good one and at least 70 years old. It told me when it was time to quit turning before I snapped it. Very tough and not brittle.
So I continued drilling out the stud in steps until I had nothing left but threads.
I started picking out the remaining threads until I could get a tap started in the hole and then I chased it all out.
Here it is with a shiny New stud. Do not look at the old stud, which is all chewed up.
Finally I cleaned it up and painted it.

That is the most love anyone has ever given an EMPI Monza exhaust. Par for the course on this build. |
Thank you.
I wanted to buy a new one. Something lighter as well, but this will have to do for now.
Probably forever
You folks probably noticed the broken head fin.
That was a sad surprise.
I have some low-temp repair alloy for aluminum I want to try, but this engine will get a top end job next year. _________________ SS100 kit kar

One broken fin will not effect anything for your purpose. Just run it. _________________ Our cars get old, we get old but driving an old VW never gets old! |

I’m sure you're right.
BTW I tried to put the cross-tie tube between the rear shock towers, but it didn’t fit. The weld draw on all the crossmembers has put some positive camber on the rear frame.
The holes in the shock towers were drawn 3/16” farther apart now, so I slotted the bolt holes in my tube slightly.
I’m trying to fit the rear subframe. I meed to get the tin on first, but I decided to test that cross member & glad I did. _________________ SS100 kit kar
