|
|
Hello everyone,
Need some help.
I want to install an additional rear heater (under the rear seat) on my Syncro, which doesn't have one.
I'm referring to the VW auxiliary rear heater that uses engine coolant.
I need to know the exact locations of the holes for the coolant hoses that come from the engine and connect to this heater.
Thanks for your help.
PS: This photo isn't of my van.

I would move the heater over to the right (passenger side) as far as you can get it, so gear that you throw under the seat doesn't block the flow of air. You could also install it between the front seats blowing backwards so its blowing towards the passengers and is unlikely to be blocked, at least while the middle seat is in use.
FWIW I added 90° hoses to the otherwise stock system on my Syncro to cut down on the force against the heater valve which cause the o-ring to leak. |

I like this ^ thinking regarding putting the heater where it’s best.
The stock location really limits storage flexibility…
I’m all about moving weight to the right and rear on Westys, so with heavy stuff under the bench I’d personally move the heater all the way to the left as it’s fairly light per size when compared to lots of other stuff to be stored under the bench.
But that also depends on what you carry.
I realize this isn’t what you’d asked, but perhaps food for thought regardless. _________________ If ever twice as rich, we’re gettin’ a double-wide

Hello,
I like things to look as if they were factory-installed.
Generally, when I add an option, unless you look at the Msticker (the option code label), you can't tell it was added; you think it was factory-installed. And that's what I like.
Thanks for the help. |

Hello,
I got some information from a friend, so I managed to do this.
Could someone please confirm my measurements?
Thanks for your help.

| Using both pictures above and the sheet metal stamping, they appear correct when comparing. With a syncro, it’s probably best to verify from below that you are clearing the fuel tank before you drill. |

| I can appreciate trying to make it look stock but I wouldn't put a stock heater in. The replacement cores are junk. I went through two of them in three years. When they fail coolant will get under your flooring and make a huge mess. The shutoff valves are common failure points too. I'd get an aftermarket one. I've put Maradyne brand heaters in a couple of bay window suby conversions I've done. They are compact and have a number of sizes available. |

Hello,
Yes, regarding the tank, I did think of that, and it's right next to it.
Thanks. |

Hello,
yes, you're right, but I want to put everything back the way it was originally.
Thanks. |

The stock look is to have the hoses plugged off or bypassed. When I still ran a rear heater I kept everything I needed to plug it off in the glove box. |

Hello everyone,
I really need someone to confirm my measurements, please.
I'm waiting for this confirmation so I can drill through and move forward with the project.
Thanks. |

You’ve certainly been polite and more than patient.
We don’t have a Syncro so didn’t offer, but can measure our ‘84 Westy if the holes are the same. Requires tearing the bed apart and under the bench…
That’s all fine, but won’t look until you or someone here confirms that the locations are identical. _________________ If ever twice as rich, we’re gettin’ a double-wide

Here is a photo from the gallery, Syncro I think.
The Syncro bits are in the way of the 2wd hose hole location.
Here is another Syncro gallery photo, hose holes a little higher it seems.

| You might not be attracting the people who could give an appropriate answer due to the fact that the thread title does not include the word 'Syncro'. |

This is a confusing bunch of measurements. It does make it look like the center to center distance for the holes is 41mm, but there is no baseline to show how high above a known point the center of either hole is. The height of the holes in your friends photo seems to be different from the one Mark (CrazyVWvanman) posted. |
