Mostly yeah! I could not for the life of me get the distributor drive gear situated without messing up the crank seating so I left it out until later. I know that's the 'harder' way but that's the choice I've got to live with now. _________________ Orange 72 Super

When I tore down/rebuilt my factory 1971 engine in 2016-2017, I also could not get the distributor drive gear out, and I had the correct tool from decades before. I ended up pounding it out with a block of wood and a hammer, once I had split the case.
No issues rebuilding, engine still running fine. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Read a lot about heater box repair vs replacement. Decided on repair as under the rust mine are actually in decent condition.
Looked like this on removal.
Scraped. Degreased. Metal brushed. Bead blasted. Ospho'd and high temp painted.

| Good job on that and probably better for and quality than any replacement available today. |

We had a 60 degree day so I pulled the engine bay seals/tarboards and replaced the output shaft seal on the gearbox. Cleaned and replaced the connectors on the 3 grounds behind the tarboards, no pics though.
Back in the garage, continued assembly...
3 & 4 installed.
And I have a long block!
Surprisingly I remembered the lower heat deflectors. _________________ Orange 72 Super

I'm at a pause with the engine. Need to have some buddies over to help me take it off the stand so...
We had another day in the 70s here, got the engine bay cleaned from 53 years of grime. Installed new tarboards and the engine seals. All from WCM, very nice quality.

While engine out...
Gearbox rubber mounts (rear, front)
Throwout bearing & Lubricate/check X-shaft
Gear input shaft sea l
Starter bushing (they wear out)>
Starter itself (clean up contacts, brushes, firm/good terminals and wiring etc.
Axle gaiters / boots
etc.
So much more room when engine is out and one does not have a lift. |

Gearbox rubber mounts (rear, front) DONE!
Throwout bearing & Lubricate/check X-shaft REPLACED!
Gear input shaft sea l REPLACED!
Starter bushing (they wear out)> I SHOULD DO THIS!
Starter itself (clean up contacts, brushes, firm/good terminals and wiring etc. DONE!
Axle gaiters / boots WILL INSPECT!
Also, I chipped out as much death foam as I could get. Metal was solid underneath. This being a Georgia car, it's not too corroded. _________________ Orange 72 Super

2 more recommendations while the engine is out:
a. Make certain that the large wing nut at the end of the clutch cable rotates easily; apply anti-seize grease to the cable end threads.
b. Spray WD-40 onto a paper towel, then pull the towel along your wires in the engine bay harness. This removes the grime on the wires and the sheath. Also run a brass bristle detailing brush over the wire terminals to take off any surface corrosion/oxidation.
If you plan on running any wires into the engine compartment for gauges, etc. now is the time to do it. There are a few different paths you can use to string them up towards the front of the car. |
