Hi all,

I'm getting ready to install new CV axle assemblies on my 69. They came as pictured below, with what looks to be a dry joint and a large zip tie to keep everything from falling apart. Each axle came with two small pouches of grease, which I'm not sure is enough.

What is the right protocol for greasing these prior to installation? Do I need to remove the center circlip and pull the whole joint off to grease it, or do I just force a bunch of grease into the void? Also, does the gasket need to be kept dry?

My biggest concern is things falling apart and/or putting it back together incorrectly.

TIA for advice!

I'd get gobs of grease in where the balls are.

Correct, you don't want the balls to fall out !!!

snip that zip tie, dont worry the bits shouldnt fall out.

put on some gloves (its messy)

pack the entirety of the packets of grease into the axles (it's enough)

Dont overthink it just pack it in there. get everything all greasy. you dont have to disassemble it just pack it down in there.

do your damnedest to try to keep the grease off the mating surfaces on the axle and the transmission (its impossible lol).

tighten everything down to spec

and you're done

That gasket was somewhat unexpected. Seems that it has been encountered before, but I thought these were steel to steel surfaces originally?

See the video here also about packing (checking the boot pre-packed or not);

I have never seen or used a gasket there. I do not believe it's necessary.

+1 to no gasket

Its a metal to metal connection. Never used a gasket

That JBugs video looks like the ticket.

The axles have a recess for the gasket, while the axles I removed have a completely flat face. Wouldn't the recess necessitate the use of the gasket to make everything flush? Would it harm anything to include even if not necessary?

But there is also a machined step. So if the mating flanges are all flat, there is a reason why it is added on this stepped flange CV joint.

with the CV joint on the shaft, and the shaft in a vice (easier), lift up on the outer race. Grease it up. Push down on the outer race, grease it up. Repeat as necessary. I use one of these to get the grease into all of the nooks and grannies.
