I bought two dune buggy bodies in poor shape , an improperly shortened pan, and an irs trans for $150. Pans are hard to get in my area of the country and I was trying to think of a way to save it. The shortening was done in front of the shifter. My question is could i move the shifter back, install a shortened shifter shaft, and make a template to install steel plating to replace the floorpans? I can weld the sheet metal in with my mig welder. Will it work? |

Sounds good seeing as how it was shortened in front of the shifter. Good luck with the project. _________________ Schrodinger's cat walked into a bar and it didn't.

You can cut the shifter mount and relocate it back (with shortened shifting rod) to move back the shifter. I would not recommend using just plain metal as the floor pans. Floor pans has the ridges for a reason, they strengthen them. You can easily bend a flat 12 gauge sheet metal then a thinner 22 gauge sheet metal with ridges stamped (or rolled) onto them. At least I wouldn't do it.
Also when relocating the shifter back keep in mine that you'll have to shorten the e-brake cables as well. You can build an extension for the shifter as an alternative. Kind of like a rod that bends back that will end up closer to the driver. |
