thing spindles allow a lift on type 1 front ends. given that thing spindles have the balljoints upside down, it means that the type 1 trailing arms won't fit. this means getting the spindles plus trailing arms is more $$$
question: could it be possible to swap sides on the type 1 trailing arms so that the balljoints are upside down and fit type 181 spindles? it sounds crazy but was wondering.
thanks. |

I doesn't seem possible. You would have to install the ball joints upside down because when you switch sides the arms are now upside down. I don't know if this is possible. Next issue is the grub screw is in the wrong spot (off 180) so now you have to flip the bars which is not good. Find a set of good used spindles and arms and do it right.
Even with all the right parts, I still ran into a ton of issues. Make sure you have adjusters on your beam as you will get lots of lift from the swap and you will need to lower the front end to keep it level.
Good luck,

You can in fact flip a Bug lower trailing arm from side to side and use it with Thing spindles. I dont know about the upper bug arm, because you have to use Thing ball joints. Ive seen it done this way, I dont think its the best way to go. The ball joint pockets are upside down when you flip the lower Bug arm over.
Look in my gallery pictures and you can see a pic of Bug arm with Thing spindle, and Thing arm with Thing spindle. Look mainly at the lower arm ball joint area. |

Yeah, I thought I'd heard of that being possible.
How often are you going to find just spindles for sale, without arms?
I've got Thing stuff, and the only issue I've run into is too much height! Adjusters are a must, or 3x3s out back. _________________ Insanity: /ɪnˈsænɪti/ -noun: repeatedly voting for the same party and expecting different results.

i thought i could save some cash by using stock vw parts, but it seems getting lift spindles is cheaper and more simple. |
