Im looking to get a set of 16" rims for my 86 westy. I am curious to know what kind of rubber people are running, I have heard of using the michelin hydroedge but can the side walls handle the weight of the van?
If you were running a 16" rim and oversized tires, what would you use?
(Im guessing that someone has asked this question already, I looked and searched and couldnt find it) _________________ 04 Ram w/ trailer hitch for haulin the VWs home

Hey Greg, I think there are a handful of good options out there. I'm not a fan of the Hydroedge (never had them), but if I remember correctly they're not rated high enough for the Westies. That's not to say they aren't good tires, GoWesty swears by them and sells a lot ot them. Check out tirerack.com, they have some good information. I think the Agilis (don't remeber the manufacturer) is supposed to be a pretty good tire. I went with the VancoContacts by Continental on a 15" wheel. I like the tire except that they wear exceptionally fast. Too fast. I've heard of others having the same experience. You might also consider the BF Goodrich All Terrain K/Os. They are a great tire (I've had 3 sets on my Jeep now, they wear well and have great traction in all types of conditions. Not certain wht they have for us Vanagon drivers in a 16" wheel, but it may be worth checking out. Good luck in your decision making. |

which design wheel did you go with??? I located a set of brand new take-off boxter twists this weekend but they are 17's and the rears are like 9.5 so its gonna be a tight fit! I'm trying to find a set of nice twists in 16"
Oh yea, I have 215 55 16's on my westy Pirelli P6's I belive, and they just squeeze in on the weight range, It was the best I could do on short notice. Couple of trips around FL and up to the mountains in GA and no problems with them at all. _________________ Markus |

The adapters were made by a company called Motorsport Technology (www.Motorsport-Tech.com)
I'll try to post some pictures soon. |

Let me jump the gun. Are those adaptors or spacers? I see H&R brand around. I have seen 20mm in both (hubcentric) spacer form and in adaptor form. I read that 1/2 inch or about 13mm is the max you want to just space out.
After reading about scrub angles and various other suspension related things, I sure would like to try 20mm more than just 13mm. I just don't know what to buy.
I can not seem to find (yet) long enough screw in studs and a machined front hub was just broken trying to press studs in, so I need to figger this thing out.

They are 20mm ]adapters[(not spacers). They bolt up to your hubs with their own lug nuts/bolts with a bolt pattern of 5 x 112. You can use your existing set (just make sure you order the adapters with conical/acorn/cone seats. Then, you will need a second set of lug nuts (only nuts - no bolts). {Porsche wheels require lug nuts with ball seats.) Simply bolt up your wheels to your adapter which has studs with a 5 x 130 Porsche pattern. Make sure everything it torqued properly and you are good to go!
Its actually very clean and easy. No messing around with longer studs etc. |

How much were the adapters? I myself have thought about trying to get some type of adapter that will work and forget about all this limited selection for the Westy. I do not know what would be the best pattern to get, possibly something from a Jeep Wrangler then you would have numerous options. Of course they may not make the wheels for Jeeps in a 7" or so wide. I want to go with a 16" rim.
Why did you choose the Porsche? Did you get a good deal on the wheels or do you just like them? |

cloudbaseracer - I went with the Porsche wheels for a number of reasons. In no particular order: I got a great deal on ebay - $300.00 including shipping; good looking imop; and perfect offsets for use with adapters. Porsche wheels seem to vary greatly in their offsets so that is something one has to pay close attention to.
I paid $265.00 for the adapters including shipping.
My goal was to pay no more than what it cost to get the commonly available direct fitting 15 & 16 inch wheels on the market but find something that was better looking. |

lug centric with interchangable pressed-in studs would certainly give one a lot of flexibility in wheel choice...I am glad to have come across this site...
