only common rail 5 cyl motors were the 20v's. both normally aspirated and turbo. I have a special "thing" for the 5 cyl motor, very very smooth and a very unique exhaust "note." While its hard to make a 5 cyl CIS system look really clean in a vanagon conversion, (except mcsyncro's work) they are the superior motor to the inline 4 and Suby. Basic installation parts are hard get, but they are worth it. A 10v CIS 5 cylinder motor will almost never fail, and I mean never. They are very mechanically sympathetic and the quality of the metal audi was using in the 80 is unparalleled. Blocks and pistons?rings are good for 300,000 miles plus, no problems. Usually wear out a tranny in a Audi 4000 before you wear out the motor.
Blah Blah Blah, 5 cylinder motors, I know, but anyone who has one in ther van will tell you, they wouldn't have it any other way. Hell, A team of German VW engineers thought it was a good idea from 1992-2002 in Africa. What to they know anyway. German engineers don't know nothin.)
Only one draw back, Not to stoked about the muffler set up. I live with it, but I am fond of having everything in the rear. The 5 cyl muffler system is a little unusual and cumbersome.
