| i'm considering putting a hightop on my 81 camper!!! does anyone know where i can find one? i'd prefer a used one as it would save me money, but i'd consider a new one. Also, anyone with a hightop, how much of an impact does it have on the handling of the van? thank you!!! |

I've always wanted a high top, but could never find one in decent enough condition to make the transition. If you can find a good donor, since you already have a camper it should go fairly easily. All the reinforcing done, just mirror the donor setup. There might be some salvage yards in northern California you could try.
The two people I've spoken with that had the hightops loved them- no leaks, always headroom. At 6'5", I'd like to stop hunching over, but I'm used to it now. Handling shouldn't be too affected, but a small tradeoff all considered.
There has been some investigation to obtaining aftermarket hightops, but apparently it needed quite a few interested parties for it to become feasible cost-wise. Not sure what ever happened though, but I suspect the idea tanked. Price was ~$800, but I'm not positive about that. I remember shipping was a big hurdle since most of the people interested were from all over the country, and the manufacturer is in California. The place apparently has the Vanagon mold and could do it if price is no object.
Good luck! |

| I was looking at a baywindow HT once. They do offer a lot of headroom and storage. I wouldn't want to drive one on a windy day though. |
