My van stolen! '90 seven-passenger vanagon, white, in pretty nice condition. Grey interior.

Utah plates 744 PFH.

VIN ends with 47475

Stolen in Oakland, CA. Those of you who live in the S.F. Bay Area, if you see it call the police with reference to Oakland Police Report # 07-072936. Oakland Police phone is 510-777-3333.

And send me a message too if you see my van.

Wish me luck. Hopefully the thief will abandon it without doing too much damage.

Yeah, the Utah plates would stand out but if the thief wants to drive the van they'll probably switch the plates. Then again, they could be stupid . . .?

Hopefully it will turn up abandoned sooner rather than later. Damn, I just rebuilt the A/C and got it blowing really cold. That compressor was Xpensive!

Perhaps having the last few digits of the VIN would help. I see white late model Vanagons ALL day long around here and your ride seems pretty original which means it'll match visually with a lot of other vans around here. I'm in the East Bay (next door in El Cerrito and Berkeley) so I'll keep an eye out but having the last few VIN numbers "could" make a difference. Good luck and that SUCKS.....

Sad wow, what a bummer. I would be devastated if Wes got stolen. You seem to be handling it well. I'm looking forward to a quick recovery. This is going to make me install a fuel pump killswitch now for sure, just need to think of a good place to hide the switch.

Chester: I added the last digits of the VIN to my first post: ends in 47475. It looks very stock, currently has white KYB shocks. VDO oil pressure gauge in the plastic cover in front of the stick shift.

Kevin: Am I handling it well? I'm not freaking out but I'm not too frickin' happy! Did a double take this morning and looked all around as if my van might be hiding behind a bush or something!

Thanks, Guys.

A few years ago our Westy was stolen from downtown San Francisco. It ended up in Las Vegas a couple of weeks later. Damn it looked bad after that.....

It was full of trash and their were druggie related items in it. It was not until I took the interior apart for renovation that I found stolen Nevada plates and the drug kit with needles and some powders. All went in the trash. I LOVE Fabreeze.......

This is just to give an example of what can happen.

Call your insurance agent to see what they advise, too.

Best of luck, I know it sucks,
Walt...

I already talked with the insurance and police this morning. Van was parked in a nice neighborhood next to expensive cars that are worth parting out. The van isn't a likely target for pro car thieves. I suspect a homeless person who wants to use the bed, or a druggie who's taking a road trip. Or maybe a criminal who needs to transport stolen goods? Okay, I'm going to stop posting this morning. I'll just wait and see if hte cops turn it up somewhere.

I'm out in Texas right now, but I'll keep my eyes open out here for it.

Keep us posted. I hope it returns with minimal damage.

Check and see if Vic Ahmed has one similar in his compound in Nevada. Different VIN of course.
Sorry man, I don't mean to sound flippant. I really feel for you. Good Luck!

Thanks, Everyone! The van has a cracked rear bumper (fiberglass) and clearcoat peeling from front and rear bumper. VDO oil gauge low on the dash. Upon close inspection the lower half of sliding door has a bad repaint.

I realize it's probably abandoned in an out-of-the way place. Or it's already gone on a road trip out of town. But thanks for keeping my van in mind.

That's a shame.

I was once stealthing in Encinitas CA, just north of San Diego. I woke up to someone literally inches from my head saying "those are no good, they're Washington plates". They then proceeded to steal the plates off of the car in front of me. Close call, but not much I could do to stop it since I didn't want to risk being discovered by a couple of criminals. The cops said they were probably using the plates to bring a stolen cars into Mexico.

Best of luck getting your van back.
