Amen. Stones, Aerosmith, McCartney, even Prince kicked ass.

The Tonight Show Band was nothing short of great. With Ed O'Shaunessy, and that sax player...... I thought Doc did a great job. Triple C's and all.......cool dude. And he barbeque's a mean burger, too!. Wink

Not a lot of the older bands that can pull off such a smooth show... Petty's vocals are better than most... virtually unchanged as far as I could tell and the lead guitarist nailed every lick just like the studio recordings... with a bit of live flare.

I was thinking the same thing as I was watching it. Real pros with real talent.

A refreshing change from some of the past half time shows... although I remember Paul McCartney's show was very good too. Another old timer that still has it.

Agreed. I wasn't impressed with Mr. Jagger and the boys, though. The music sounded good, but Mick just looked & sounded like an octagenarian (sp?). Even they got OLD.

Petty and the Heartbreakers still sound great because they've never really come off the road. It's a good bet you can see him every summer, if you're near a decently sized city. Tickets usually aren't too expensive, either. It's always a highly entertaining "greatest hits" kind of show.

The only problem is he has Jackson Browne as the opening act every year. Mad How many times do I have to hear "She Wants To Be Somebody's Baby"...

I still get chills when I hear Tom's version of "So You Wanna Be A Rock n' Roll Star"...his voice is just so well suited to it. Of course, that band's always just wanted to be the Byrds anyway.

How could you lump Prince into that category???
Devoid of talent?
Yeah, riiiiight.

I have to agree there... while I am not a big fan of Prince's music over the years that little MoFo is an AMAZINGLY good guitar player... he has talent above that short list of tabloid pop fame ^

Hey.... just my opinion.... and as for his guitar playing?? C'mon.. ok... how about some real guitarists.. John McLaughlin, Al Dimeola, Allan Holdsworth.. Prince in MY OPINION (just what it says)... reeks of the tabloid pop fame.... his songs are serioiusly souless pop drivel compared to so much fine music. I mean.... 1999? Oh yeah.. wasn't he using the locrian mode in that? Hmmm was it in "Jack U Off" or "Hot Thing" that Prince showed his lyrial prowess...

The only part of your statement I was disagreeing with was that he has "no talent" IMHO he does have more talent then the other 3 you mentioned put together.

I was speaking of something I saw him playing guitar and covering some song that was not his... some tribute show. can't remember exactly who or what it was for but do remember being impressed by his performance.

I was merely stating that the performance I saw showed he has *some talent... beyond what he may be "known for". ( and the class you put him in) I never lumped him in with any "world class" guitar hero's

I can agree with this.. as I have seen a performance by him on Guitar where he showed more talent than I had known he possessed. Still, those songs... jeeeeez......When Doves Cry? ... Doves Cry? What.. someone take their birdseed away?

Petty, used to be the worlds ugliest white man.
Now he's the worlds ugliest old man.

Still like his music. Saw him OKC around '78 or '79. He was opening for Jackson Browne then. Kinda funny.

Sounded the same to me last night.
