just wondering how hard a job this is. the manual (Haynes) makes it sound more complex than it probably is. my temp needle runs about a 1/3 of the way up on the guage. is that the normal spot? seems to be running slightly lower than normal and the weather has been warmer the last few days. when it was colder it seemed to be running slightly warmer. anyone got a better picture or website on how to do this. |

I had a similar question a while back. Hope this helps. Not sure about the warmer in colder weather part.. My temp now reads mid range on the money after ~10 minutes of driving. _________________ 09 Suzuki SX-4 Crossover |

IIRC (its been a few yrs) you have to drop the exhaust (partially at least) on a 1.9 to change the thermostat. _________________ 84 Westy 4spd sold |

Not true on my 85. I've changed the thermostat without removing any exhaust parts at all. It is a tight fit in there though. _________________ 1985 Westy, 1.9L automatic (Daisy)

If it's not overheating, then the thermostat is working.
However, it is recomended that the thermostat be changed every couple of years to prevent a failure (stuck closed). _________________ Current VW drives: 1984 Westfalia
