Here are some photos showing my new Norcold DC-0040 installation.

I mounted it as high as possible which left space below for a large drawer.

I guess the Westfalia folks assumed you would go to bed before it gets dark, or that you would use a flashlight in the upper bunk? My family likes to read before bed. I found these close-out mini fluorescent units that use 8AA batteries and hard wired them to 12V. They give off plenty of light and draw very little current.

I recently found this nice fluorescent fixture on eBay. I’m thinking, besides helping to see in the back closet and cargo area, that one night when I need to fix something in the engine bay, I’ll be glad it’s there.

Also note the third brake light—swiped from the ‘91 Subaru I pulled my engine from.

where did you put the wires for the one ON the poptop?

id love to have light up there, but never know where to put the wires, esp since they have to be long enough to go all the way up and down.

He said it could also run off of batteries (8 AA), so you would not have to worry about wires. otherwise you'd have to run the wires all the way to the back (rear) where the lowest pivit point is.

A lot of wiring indeed!

Actually the light is wired to 12V. From the light, I ran a wire over to the driver's side pop-top strut. With zip strips, I attached the wire to the strut, leaving enough slack at the hinge so the wire doesn't get stretched when the top is closed. From there the wire goes down into the vent channel and basically follows the rear speaker wires over the door frame, down the passenger A-pillar, and hooks into the cigarette lighter circuit. I will try to post some photos this weekend.

Westylife,

My '84 is a Wolfsberg Edition so it has the newer style upholstery which was in pretty good shape when I bought the van. The carpet, on the other hand, was beyond help. It was actually rotted through on driver's side, or I might have tried to clean and salvage it. I bought a replacement set from Sewfine which worked out OK. I was a little disappointed with the quality and finish of the pieces (especially considering the cost). I was also was not prepared for having to glue the carpet down. I have never owned a car where you couldn't pull the carpet out if it gets wet or needs serious cleaning. I will try to post some more photos this weekend.

Here's some pics of our recently completed '82. Stripped all the wallpaper, glue, and finished with patio and floor paint. We wanted to brighten up things....certainly did!

That isn't my Vanagon, but I have the same center console in two of mine. It is made by WOLF and comes in a variety of colors. Terry Kay sells them here on theSamba vanagon parts section. Another source might be http://www.jcwhitney.com/WOLF-AUTOMOTIVE-PREMIUM-G..._10101.jcw I find mine very useful (the cupholders alone would sway me to buy one) Kim
