|

Greetings all! I have been searching high and low for my camper. It's slim pickins being situated in Iowa these days, but I have found a beauty in Minnesota. Its an original owner- completely and totally babied by its owner who is now too old to drive and sad to have to let it go. Never on the road in the winter- always garaged- basically in very new condition. The engine has 116,000 miles on it. No major work ever done, but meticulously maintained in every way. he is asking $9,800 for it. I would love to hear some opinions on this whole thing. They are checking the compression and the head gaskets, but they assure me that it has never leaked a drop and is in pristine condition. So.... what do you think?????? |

My first reaction is its a tad steep. I've seen some pretty nice westies sell off of ebaymotors for 1/2 that in the same year with low mileage motors.
If you can travel and pick one up, watch ebaymotors closely. There are several guys who wheel and deal in the vanagon/westie versions that seem to come up with clean units.
Just my personal opinion. My 80 westie I bought at a chairty, and restored it myself. |

yeah- I'm starting to see it as a bit high, but am still not sure what its worth to have one in such condition.
Anyway- the compression figures are back- they are 120, 122, 125 and 128. Anymore input???????
Thanks much |

$9800 may not be that bad, but we don't really have enough details. 88-91 years will tend to go for this much and much more. I have gotten an 87 Westy for $2600 recently, but that's rare and $6-7k is more typical. 84-86 Will be a little cheaper, but it all depends on condition. If yours is a later 1988+ (fiberglass bumpers) in pretty good shape, I would say jump on it. Aloha-

My 1.9 puts 150 on each cylinder. I think 122 is a bid low.
At least for the money....
only my opinion, |

With 116,000 miles, and compression in the 120's, you are reaching the point where it might be close to needing an overhaul. On the plus side, the numbers are close to each other which is a good sign.
I agree that it is a little steep, unless it is a synchro. _________________ This thread SUCKS!!! |

They can't drive, they don't need all that money. I can bet it is going to need some work. 100,000 mile mark means time to invest maintainance money. Depending who used it 100,000 + or - 20,000 miles = dollars. If it is straight clean and flawless and you are going to keep it a long time pay good money and get a sweet ride. Expect to spend money on bushings in the frontend, struts all around, clutch, brakes, calipers, roters, drums wheel cylinders, clutch slave cyl, dash blower moter, head gskts, and a few other items. Look through the service history and see what has been done. If in the last 30,000 miles or so afew items on the list have been done you might be alright. |
