i would not know but the guys that do would probably need to know what kind of case it is. what i can tell you is, the origenal bug engins are either made of magnesium (not likely) or have magnesium mixed in with the "other" metal. and if it is a later engin from a bus or type four it is alumminum. i know that aluminum can be welded with an alluminum welder of cours, but i do not know if the other cas can be welded. so what is the answer? i dont know, lets find out.

Since you're actually heating up the metal to a melting point when welding, I wouldn't want to even try if there is magnesium in it. Seeing how magnesium doesn't exactly extinguish once it's on fire.

is there a way of telling if i have a magnesium case or not...

the numbering system on engine?

any help would be much apreciate
to make the magnesium cases, they had to heat it up to melting point to pour the mold so...im not trying to be cynical, just wondering if its worth a a try...

if it was magnesium what type of welder would one try..would they all pretty much do the same job?

It is possible to weld magnesium, but you probably need to take precautions to keep it from overheating, and the durability of the results certainly wouldn't match a new case. You are better off to get a new case, any hope to get the guys who sold you the engine to do right? Who are they? Good luck, Jeremy

The decision to weld a case depends upon quite a few variables. The old engine cases were welded all the time. I have a 36 horse that has a pancake sized patch in front of the oil cooler where the piston detonated and put a small hole in the case. I disassembled the engine and inspected it thuroughly before rebuilding. I have been running that engine for the past six years with no problems... You do not mention where on the case you need to weld, that is an important consideration. some cracks tend to grow and effect a critical stress point in which case I would start over with a different case.

Be sure to check cost of welding exotic metal. May exceed price of new case. Why weld it if you aren't sure of result. New cases aren't that expensive.
