i'm using a motorcycle type switch for my lights:

but i'm figuring out that the motorcycle doesn't incorporate the brake circuit into the turn signals. on a motorcycle the tail light doesn't flash, only comes on, and gets brighter when braking. i'm trying to use led 3 wire tail lights, red is brake/turn, black is the tail light, and white is ground.
can i run 2 wires to each red wire on the tail light? one from the brake light switch, and on each from the turn signal switch? |

Switch is probably not going to let it happen.... You need switch the disconnects turnsignal "flash" on side you want brake light to light....
By running two wires to LED, "brake lights" will always override "flasher".... And will effective short both left and right LEDS together through brake light switch unless you use isolation diodes...
Something like this is probably going to be your answer....
IF you decide to use relays, I suggest you use sockets for relays as it gets quite congested (wiring wise) at relay terminals...
You may also be able to use your motorcycle turn signal switch, especially if it has "timer" shut off, to trigger relays for turnsignal/brake operation...

in your diagram, can you use two 5 prong relays and two 4 prong relays??
just asking because that's what i have on hand, went to 2 different parts stores and nobody had 'relays' or knew how to look them up. let alone the relay plug. |

Buy a trailer convertor. This is an inline device for converting seperate turn signal circuits on the vehicle to combined brake/turn circuit on the trailer. Then wire the back of your car like a trailer. The device has seperate right and left turn, brake and tail inputs. Then the outputs are combined left and right turn/brake and seperate tail circuits. The device converts a seperate turn into a combined turn/brake. These are inexpensive and found at most auto parts houses. Works every time. If you are using LEDS all the way around buy a load adapter so your flasher will trigger properly. Hope this helps.

Not a problem. Glad I could help and point you to an easy solution. I've used these for years now. I started using them on conversions for Beetles to use the 1961 and earlier "Snowflake" tail lamps or Ford tail lamps, which are single bulb dual element circuits. They are simple, cheap and work great.

Auto parts stores suck for auto electrics..... I use mostly commercial electrical suppliers ....

Also check local auto stereo shop that specalize in AUDIO and ALARM work.... My local supplier for relays and sockets is actually a stereo store, and he usually has relays and sockets with pigtales, and is cheaper than ordering online and paying shipping...
You got to start thinking outside local auto parts store mentality when doing serious wiring projects.....
After you "smoke" several converters you will begin to think "relays"....

I've used the convertors with reliable results for years now. Never had an issue with a "smoked" convertor. I do buy the better quality name brand "non smoking" ones though. Just be sure not to overlaod the circuit with extra bulbs. That is what will "smoke" the convertor for sure. The cheaper convertors are designed for 1 bulb per circuit. I think no more than 1.9 AMPS per circuit, so make sure you test the AMPS your bulbs require before installing the convertor. You can upgrade to a higher amperage rated convertor if you need to. Relays definatly work great with perfect results. I actually used them well before I started using the convertors. But you cant beat the simplicity of installation of an electronic convertor. To each his own. Good luck either way will convert your lights.
