Hey All;

I'm thinking of putting an electric windshield washer in my 71 Super. I'm not fond of flat spare tires, or mud-covered windshields.

I've got a "jug" & washer unit out of an Olds Cutlass parts car that I might stick in the Bug, using a push-button switch to run the thing. Nothing fancy.

Have any of you done anything like this? What went right, what went wrong?

Thanks, in advance!

JSH

I put an electric washer in a 77 bus, because I kept getting leaks in the valves in the steering column. Was easy to wire to a push button switch that fit into an existing hole, I think I wired the hot fron the accessory fuse (same as radio) so it was always hot, grounded to a tab up behind the dash. The biggest problem was that I still needed to put some air pressure into the tank in order to get it to spray with some force, but too much pressure just forced the fluid through the pump, so it was a balancing act. I sold the van, and I haven't talked to the buyer again yet, that was Sept., so I'm not sure how it has worked out in the long run. I used a pump from a Jetta, and the stock reservoir on the van. I think it might work better if I had used the Jetta reservoir that the pump came off as a unit. For tubing I just went to a parts store and found various diameters of washer tubing. Good luck, Jeremy

I ordered a horizontal tank and pump from JC Whitney. Installation in a Bay Bus was easy. I took my wiper switch, sawed off the back where the original pneumatic button was, used some zip ties to hook the JC Whitney switch on, put it back in the dash and it works perfectly and looks stock.

I put an electric wahser in my chevy truck. I used an old eletric fuel pump that came from a local junkyard, it works great the only two thinks to keep in mind are make sure the pump is fully submerged in water, and it will drain the water qiuck.

I went to the junk yard and found a washer/pump out of a mazda thats perfect for mounting in front of the vent box on my 69 bug.
its about 10in. hight and 2in. thick.
the damn thing works great.
four bucks was all i paid for it.
the best thing of all is that it doesent take up what little room in the trunk.

As an alternative, I got one of those little electric air pumps powered from the cigarette lighter and every once in a while I check the pressure in the spare and fill 'er up. No need to go to the gas station for air. Bonus is that if I get a flat and the spare is low I can fill up the spare while I'm getting the flat ready to remove.

I installed a universal washer pump, and used the stock washer jug. remember to remove the shader valve or the pump will pull a vacuum on the jug and stop pumping, I also used a push button switch and mounted it under the dash, works great!!!!!!!!

I forgot about that, no wonder it wouldn't pump worth a damn with no air! Jeremy
