I saw a bay window bus in the gallery that had a 1600cc subaru engine, then upgraded a 2.2l subaru. Is the owner/converter out there? The pics were called "h2o bus" on the web. I have installed a 2.2l subaru in my '72 bus, and am wondering if you had clearance problems with the fuel tank and throttle body?
Thanks,
John |

| Howdy there......I have currently finished my 76 camper with the ej22 and yes there are some problems with the fit, yet not at all too overwelming. Had to make my own rear engine mounts and cut notch out of the cross member to get the starter to fit. The intake was tricky and finally decided to cut a recess into the gas tank, reweld a piece of metal there, made from small propane bottle wall, to make just enough room for the rubber flex hose I used to replace the original, large ell of the Subaru intake. Basically smaller O.D. and some space was all that was needed. Crowded spot I know but doable. |

i've been reading up on this for a while and my only question is how in the hell can you run a radiator without it being visible to the naked eye? i vote between the frame rails but will it work? _________________ proud owner of a defunct 1979 sunroof kombi

I have a 2,2 Subie which I'm considering putting in Roadcow. I have a Toyota engine currently installed and have read Kannedys site about the intake to gas tank issues. I think I may install it but put on Dual Webers if I can find some manifolds. I know my fuel mileage and starting won't be as good without the FI, but I think it will look the part in a Bus. _________________ 71 Westy Roadcow

I have read lots of posts regarding the install of a Subaru engine
into a 79 or earlier bus. All we seem to get is talk, and no pictures
of a clean install. So I say, like the myth of SasQuatch I think this
is just a folklore legend. Show some proof, or let the
legend die, and let aircooled live on forever. |

Go to the Non-VW engine conversion forum at www.aussieveedubbers.com. Lots of subie conversion info, pics, etc.

some people over on the shoptalkforums.com have put subies into their rails and dune buggies, plenty of relevant information I am sure, seeing as how some of them (the rich/lucky ones) are running bus trannies anyways so the install would be pretty similar, short of radiator placement of course. _________________ [email protected]

You want pics? I've got a couple... but they aren't for an aircooled version.
These are pics of a Subaru engine going into an 88 Westy (i think) being done by Rocky Mountain Westy in Ft. Collins Colorado. (do a YouTube search for Rocky Mountain Westy and see a couple of their videos, no I don't work for them.)
Pretty impressive if you ask me:
- nice looking adapter plate to the transmission
- very beefy mount modifications, I wouldn't be afraid to take it of road or through a stream
- didn't get to drive one, but the owner just smiled at me when I asked how the power felt.
Apologies for the crappy resolution - I only had my iphone at the time.
Before you ask: 12K for everything - engine, mounting kit, stainless steel radiator lines, adapter plate, installation, etc.

Now that... would be funny!
(I've always wanted one of those 360's...) _________________ 1971 Westfalia with a high top.

Holy cow, you must be the first person to actually put the one piece of information everyone asks about but never gets posted. Thank you _________________ Toby http://www.aircoolednut.com/

ej20 G in a 78 bay my husband did it all himself. Has the kenedy adapter, but he welded many pieces from scratch. Has the subaru heating system and the subaru a/c. This is a picture of me pulling it out for it's maiden voyage around the block. And yes this has the turbo

Still not linking to your thread, opens the main forum page only. I'm assuming you are Dilly but can't find any build thread. What's it titled as and what section is it in? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
