clutch cable 1971

Yesterday my clutch cable broke. I replaced it this morning. About 2 years ago I went through the same scenario. Both of them broke right at the front cable end to swivel.

Why do these things break like they do? The swivel seems fine with no catching twisting, etc....so I can't understand why these things would break unless there is some sort of repetitive flex or strain put on the cable at this point.

Any ideas?

Two months ago my accelerator cable broke. Are there upgraded/more robust cables available?

I can't see where either of these can be installed incorrectly...unless I didn't adjust it correctly.

Any insight is appreciated.

i would accuse your clutch of binding at the pedal, and not swinging so that it kinks at the hook end. I know you said you don't think its binding, but a break like that suggests it is. check the clutch arm for burrs or lowspots worn into it. maybe use more grease this time and triple check the action.
as for the throttle cable I made my own out of some super heavy duty steel cable. attached it in the front by looping a key ring thru the pedal bit, a super thick carabeiner clipeed into that , and the cable looped thru that and clamped w/ a cable clamp (1.50 at ACE). I broke down on the side of the road and that was my fix. the only part that is a PITA is threading it thru the throttle body due to the end fraying over time, but how often do you need to do that?
the big carabeiner is there becasue if you go straight thru the key ring w. the cble it gets bent at too sharp of an angle and will break pretty quickly ((ask me how i know ) I like the thicker cable much better now, OG is pretty thin stuff.

Hey I have a 71 also and my throttle cable used to break a lot going through the fan housing. My problem was there is a tube that runs through the fan housing and it tends to rattle loose. If you pull the tube tight and put a hose clamp around the tube on the other side of the fan housing to keep it from moving around, also put rubber grommets around the holes where the tube passes through penetraters it keeps it from vibrating around. I did all this with the engine out so it was pretty easy I don't think it would be to hard to do with engine in. I broke 2 cables in a matter of 1 year and its been 3 years since and I haven't broke a cable yet. Good luck
