I've been thinking about doing it for a while. Sounds like a good idea. Got to be someone who already has.

I recent bought a bus cluster off of ebay cause it had a clock in it. I got it here and it had a type 3 clock in it. I was not happy cause this is not what I wanted. I complained and they guy refunded my money minus shipping cost both ways. It was done pretty decent looking but for the money I spent I wanted a bus clock. I will see if I can find the pictures.

Ya its should be real easy and a fraction of the cost of a bus clock.

My clock is from a 69, so it's 12 v. What I found is mounting like that it sits back to far compared to the other side ( fuel gauge)

I removed the chorme trim and the sliver insert, Then cut out the webbing in the dash mount with a hot knife.

The spare hole in the Dash is tappered, so now the clock still won't sit full agaisnt the Black plastic.. I'm sure by using a Dremel I can cut about a 1/2" off of the Hole and the clock will sit flush.

Doing this all you will see is Black. It looks like it's doable, just takes time, depending on how you want it to look,

In this case I want the clock to look factory ( to the untrained eye ) , but don't care if it works..

I'll post photo's when it's finished

Ok after hours of screwing around ,, this is my Hack job...

It starts by removing the web or suports between the two rings. Doing this allows the clock to slide down in this area and sit flush.

When you get your hands on a T3 clock and take the bazle off, here what is there. make sure you get the large Black locking ring

Next is the pieces you will be using, on the right is that large Black ring,, you need this

These cut are here to relieve the housing, It has to be just a hair large than the plastic dash mount.. To do this I set the gray piece in and the glass, Then made a fine pencil line around the glass,,, removed all that and carefully cut with a dremel. It took about 6 wheels to make all the cuts. ofcourse make the direction of rotation on the dremel is away from the clock face.. if it binds up you could screw uo the face or needle

Here the clock is fit in the hole, This is what you going to do with the black ring

This photo is hard to see,, The retaining ring / Black ring is in place, On the ring is two tabs. This watch you see at the hole. but in stock form there a bit to long, trim those and and the tabs is another ear ?? trim that off. also blow this tabs and on the body is a casting with a seam, trim the seam off
you will see all this as you do this.

You know what this is.. when you get to the point of the last photo,, cut this tabs off this thing

Here ya go, you know have factory VW mounting tabs OEM.. This thing looks very close to a factory install, 39 years later..

Turn it over and here it is,,,,, Hillbilly hack job, total cost $0

The glass sit tight againest the dash mount / hole. no gaps, no silver showing,, no nasty straps, Duct tap , hose clamps ect holding the clock in place.

I saw your rings, and had those in mind,, Take another close look at the clock.. at the top where I did the cuts is a lip. This insets along the plastic housing, by having the clock this way, the glass face is pressed against the Black housing..

Now the stock black ring also insets and is against the lip on the clock, holding pressure against the lip
Then the two pieces I cut off the stock plug ( face ) was quick for me,,, I think your alum piece would be better..

Remember the cost of this project was targeted at Zero $$$ out put... I came close, it did cost Dremel wheels and about 8 hours of time,, I did screw up one dash panel ? face plate.
shit I don't even know if this clock works ..

But Hell what can ya ask of a Hack job.

Seems like a lot of work to me but I know it is done because of the cost of finding the right clock. Keep looking! I found my last one for a Bay at a local swap meet with the complete gauge cluster. Bought the whole unit for $10.00! Sold it the next day too......

hollywood speedometer (818) 761-5139 will replace the movement in your bus, KG, T3 or porsche clock. i inquired about it a few years ago and don't remember it being too expensive.

certainly a lot easier than all this...

That is if you already HAD a clock in your bus. You can buy type III clocks for $10 to $40 in the classifieds and modify on your own time. Where as a bus clock will set you back $100 - $150 or more. I think it's a good option. Peace!
