Volksauthority in San Jose Ca was broken into today at 4am. The theives stole a 1952 standard split window beetle. The car is grey with grey wheels and chrome bumpers. The theives were seen leaving the scene in a green and white truck (possibly a ford) towing the car away on a black trailer.
Please call Ray phone number (408) 286-7306.
Thanks.

That's sad, I'll have to stop in and see Ray this week.

If I had a car that rare I would get lojack installed. My friends car was stolen and they got it back pretty much right away.. They also found 3 other cars when they found it...

Rare cars are stolen all the time. There is money in parts and money in overseas buyers.

You best believe we will be on the lookout down in the Monterey area for anything out of the ordinary or early split parts.

Update from Mark Merrill:

The gray 52 split standard stolen from Volks Authority has been recovered this AM in San Jose disassembled and in pieces. A suspect was arrested (he was so pissed off he kicked out the window of the police car, which did not make them very happy...). He had some of the parts in boxes in his attic and under the house. Ray is inventorying the parts to see what is missing.

The body was off the pan. Obvious missing parts include the pan, transmission and rear wheels (maybe still together??), the engine decklid, front fenders and seats. As you know, standard seats are the kind which bolt to the floor with wing nuts - these were recovered with grey cloth and looked pretty good. We'll know more later today when the police get through documenting the stuff. There were some other VW parts there which do not belong to the 52 standard. If anyone sees light gray decklid, front fenders and 16 inch wheels or the seats in a swap meet or auction. please let Ray know at 408-286-7306 or [email protected].

WTF - who the hell WATCHED theives steal this Split? I know there isn't always something you can do..but can't you at least follow them and get the license plate number or something?

I just can't sit by and watch shit like this happen. My co-worker and I saw a lady get a locked bank bag get snatched out of her arms one day here at my office...I work in a Bank building. We were returning from lunch in seperate trucks and chased this fucker long enough to get his license plate number and a good description for the cops. He was caught 40 miles away an hour or so later.
