|
|
I just bought a dual mount antenna for my 65.
I need you opinion on which way to mount it, and what side?
I know it was up to the dealer to mount them, and they did it any way they pleased... So with that, I just need an opinion.
Should I mount it at an angle like this?
Or straight up and down?
Should I put it on the drivers side or passengers? _________________ 2013-2014 Vice President of SOVW www.sovw.org

I would put it on the drivers side, straight up and down. The drivers side so its easy to reach, straight up and down cuz it goes with the windshield angle better than having 2 different angles.

Angled, mounts slightly further apart, driver's side. _________________ Andy

I like it better straight up and down.
And x2 on the driver's side so you can pull it down in case you're coming up to some low branches or a low garage door. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

If you mount it straight, will there be any problems with a car cover fitting? I know it is retractable to an extent, but it seems an angled mount would allow a cover to fit better.
Anyone with a straight mount have a hard time with a car cover, or is there enough slack that it doesn't matter? _________________ Eric - 1966 camper bus

....straight up... errrr... the antenna.
I think that's the way I'll go. The car cover is an interesting thing. Maybe my wife can sew a antenna condom in it? _________________ 2013-2014 Vice President of SOVW www.sovw.org

After drilling, is there anything I can do to prevent rust? Any good tips besides sealing it with silicone? _________________ 2013-2014 Vice President of SOVW www.sovw.org

Straight up and aligned with the front door seam. As far as rust after drilling, spray a Q-tip with a compatible clear paint or if you have it dip the tip in the paint the car was done with and run the tip around the inside of the 2 holes. That should do the trick. _________________ Never drive faster than your Angel can fly

^^ good trick.
A step bit or "unibit" will give you a cleaner hole in sheetmetal than a regular twist bit.
Here's what's worked for me for drilling clean holes where you can't centerpunch: Twist a really good center point for each hole with an x-acto, then use masking tape over the area, and drill a real small (like 3/64") hole with a twist bit, being very careful that it doesn't walk. Remove the tape, then go at it naked (the paint, not you) with the step bit. After the first step, make sure you don't have any chips in the paint, then you should be good to carefully go all the way.
Oh, and my vote is passenger side, rear quarter panel, angled toward the front of the car. _________________ Evan H.

Angled. Less flex in the antenna at highway speeds and it might save you 0.01 gallons of gas a year due to the improved aerodynamics. _________________ Fusillade |

I have my antenna mounted on the right side at an angle that is it the same angle as the windshield. It looks faster. Along with a right side mirror, they compliment each other well. |
