MC Syncro, I've always admired your 3B conversion. Using the rotated NA 20V intake manifold was truly a stroke of genius. One question I've meant to ask you is how much more you inclined the engine to get it to clear the lid. Did you do any sump or oil pump pickup mods, or are they all stock?

Thanks,

David

Thanks for the kind words! I had several mock-up intakes that I tried,
but the 7A manifold worked out the best, But man it was a bitch! I must
have 2 months of work into that manifold! you know, I'm no genius by
any stretch, but I have been an Audi/VW tech since 1983 so, experience
is on my side. As for the angle of the engine, I just layed it over until
the engine lid would close, and built mounts from there. I used a 87 4000
quattro oil pan because the 3B pan is too big and stuck down to far.
I never had any oiling issues with this set-up. I have to say the biggest
challenge of the whole conversion was the flywheel. it wound up with 2
ring gears on it I used a 4000 flywheel, but since I wanted to use the syncro
starter, I had to machine the flywheel to accept the original wasser boxer
ring gear, and because I wanted to use the stock 3B ignition system, I
had to use the 5 cyl ring gear because it has the correct amount of teeth
for the speed sensor to match the 3B's ECU. I also had to add a steel pin
in the correct location for the 3B's reference sensor! I used a vanagon
clutch disc, with a 4000 Q pressure plate.

Wow, the flywheel, adaptor plate, and mount bar must have taken at least as long as the intake manifold to build and fine tune. So you kept the starter on the bellhousing rather than in the Audi location?

Did you configure your mount crossmember similar to the South African bar? I assume you used standard 5 cylinder Audi hydro mounts.

I just recently bought a cheap 1991 200 Quattro with a 3B. It has an IA Stage 2 chip for 277 hp. I didn't buy the car to part out, but your conversion comes to mind from time to time and gets me thinking.

Thanks for the information. I was sorry to hear that you'd sold your van, but maybe another one will be in the future once Vanagon withdrawal sets in. Smile

My TIICO conversion works quite well and gives me all the power I need. Only problem is that the vibration seems to be causing the failure of the place on the exhaust can where the cat converter meets it. I've been through three and these babies are pricy! Any source for some type of flex connection between the block and the cans?

Beck,

Your vibration issues can be solved easy enough. I forget, but there is a shop that uses a Mercedes hydraulic mount. All is well if you use that setup. I think it is from a W201 chassis 190E (mid 1980's.) Use the SEARCH to find postings about that. I recall they sell the parts, so you can just bolt it in and be happy.

I LOVE the VW I engines. I have driven and repaired them for decades. I have hundreds of thousands of miles under my butt with them. I just could not get over the weight to performance issues in a Vanagon. Hence I went Suby. "I'm turning Japanese, I really think so....."

Now we are about four years down the line with my happily running TIICO engine. Still eats mufflers because I have not swapped out the mounts as recommended (shame on me) Need to get some maint done and want to locate the original instllation instructions. TYICO web site vanished along with good old peter. Does anyone have a PDF of the actual, no kidding, step by step instllation instructions?

PS Anyone got info on the 5 speed tranny that TIICo was going to market? Any others "out there"?

i personally think all of the conversions cost about the same- turnkey from hans vanaru/ bostig-self install or tiico...who has the support after?who has less issues after install? who has parts readily avail? & most important is what engine manuf the owner really wants in there and appearance of said install. does it fit /does it look like it belongs there? bottom line is if your happy with it go for it! research/think/talk/research/think & talk some more then decide. FAS (Foreign Auto Supply) in Maine took over the Tiico program all parts are available through them.

I think that the install manual is available through the Yahoo™ Tiico group, in the files section. If its not send me a PM, I've got it as a PDF, but I've got to search around on some old external hard drives to find it.

I am going to answer the question that the original poster asked. This info is based on my own personal experience and others may have not had the same:

I installed a tiico from Jon in Maine (who is dealing with all the tiico stuff now). It was a few years back when the kit was relativly new. Had to do some detail (but costly)upgrades like a belt upgrade and fuel rail upgrade.
I also had the HO version.
Always ran great. Idle was a bit rough but that was the cam used to get the ho power range. Didn't have vibration issues with the upgraded parts.
Jon is also great to deal with. Plus he was semi local to me (about 3-4 hours away). I no longer have that van.
I have seen there new deisil conversion and it looks nice. Drives and rides nice. I don't know squat about oil burners so can't comment on the specs. I also forgot to mention it was a turbo. Since I don't know about diesels I personaly wouldn't get one.

I right now have a brand new Zetec motor sitting in my garage waiting for me to purchase the install kit. I live within a driving distance of the Bostig guys. They are great guys to deal with. I would have to say they have the best customer service out there. If you istalled a Zetec and a tranny from Daryl you could forget about any issue for thousands of miles. All you would have to do is maintance issues for the next ten years or so...
The pros and cons of the Zetec are on the bostig.com website. I don't know if they have any of the new motors still but worth checking. For 1,300 bucks I got a brand new from Ford motor. has all the injectors, wiring, brackets, coil.on it. Even had oil in the pain from being hot ran at the factory. Plus is also has a bolck heater already installed. All you need is a 30.00 harness to make it work. Stainless steel four into one header. The pipes are decent size and the flanges are friggin thick. I can take some detailed pictures later tonight if you want.

B.
