For Denver area folks,
Is Volkswagens on the Green this Sunday?
Is anybody from The Samba planning on attending? _________________ Joe T.

They aren't doing too much to publicize it, are they? It is now listed on the Samba 'Events' board, and here at:
http://amberchrome.deviantart.com/art/Moon-Shot-110870509
and on the Samba, it's on this page:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/shows/
Winston and I will be there. I need to wash his engine and wax him. but I'll be showing off his:
1)Sew Fine Interior
2)Cut Refrigerator Door
3)De-tinted windows
and...
4)JALOUSIES!

I think I might have one new dent to show off since last time.
Looking forward to it! _________________ Joe T.

I washed Winston. I washed his engine.
I waxed Winston. I oiled his interior plastic and rubber.
I put Rain-X on Winston's windshield and the Hellas.
Today I spent 4 hours cleaning and waxing his fiberglass top.
YOU GUYS BETTER LOOK IMPRESSED!!

Here are a couple of pictures from this years event.
If I'm not mistaken, this red van didn't even win in the "Vanagon" category. I thought for sure it would win best in show. He was robbed. Dude, if you're on the Samba, your van was the topic of conversation in the Vanagon crowd.
Here's a good group. There were more vans scattered around the event.

There was a discussion about that DIY DOKA a while ago. There were many unanswered questions, and plenty of requests for more photos.

I've got a couple more, but they're as lame as this one. Rob(msinabottle), I'm sure, took a bunch of pictures of it. Hopefully he will post them. |

That Doka was beautiful! Everything about it was absolutely top notch. Really nice interior, too. Very cool to see it in person.
It was great to see some Samba folks and talk Vanagon. I met Luke from WildWesty in Boulder, very nice guy and extremely knowledgeable about Subaru conversions. He had a customer's ride there (the cream colored '85 Wolfsburg) that had a 2.5 case w/2.2 heads and intake, very cool.
I also talked to the OEVeedub.com guy for awhile, they have SA grilles and Rheins in stock, which I didn't know.
Major thanks to MSInabottle for the sausage and conversation! Winston is looking better than ever!
FNGRUVEN, I stopped by your spot but you were all locked up. Your Vanagon looks great--just curious, why do you have that cover on the front grill?
It was a bittersweet day for me because my Vanagon is currently laid up after possibly the most boneheaded move I've made in these 25 years of working on cars...More on that in a different thread. _________________ Joe T.

I agree that red DIY DOKA was the coolest Vanagon there. I also admit that I spent most of my time looking at the old splitties and bays. made me miss my '71 bay real bad. I think I am on a new mission now. I stupidly forgot my camera too. |

Dang, sorry I missed that event. Looks like a great vanagon/doka turnout. Looks like a diesel syncro wast there? I was in Moab, so I had a good excuse! _________________ Joel Lane

Hey Joe, sorry I missed you. I heard about your misfortune. Bummer. The cover on the grill is just to reduce the amount of air that leaks into the cab through the fresh air vents. I was wishing I'd removed it for the drive back home. It was a little warm. Two weekends ago it was snowing where we were camping and heat was still a priority. You need to get up to Fort Collins some day. |

heck yeah that red diy doka was cool. I (we) are still talking about that up here in fort collins. It was really cool to meet some new people and see all the usuall and the cool vws. I'm still hot from yesterday, and today isnt helping much. Im gonna have to go swimming in the river or something. I deffinitely wish i got some more pictures of that red doka and the others. I liked the sandrail thing with the revolving paintball gun chair. Lots of interesting stuff there. later _________________ "go slower, go lower!!!"

|

It was a lovely day.
All right, I spent three days getting Winston ready. I washed his body, and his engine, and spent a delightful four hours as otherwise described cleaning the fiberglass on his roof--ecce:
The plan was to get there as close to 8 Sunday Morning as possible, we actually got there at 8:30 and it was filling up! It was a good thing I'd found out the night before that the Club sponsoring the show needed to charge $10 this year to cover what must be considerable expenses, fortunately, I had the money.
Like all things that clog passages, a clump of Vanagons came in at the same time, notably, all these--including the group from Rocky Mountain Westy in Fort Collins, but neither Rodknock nor Joetiger brought their vans! We Sambanistas were under-represented!
I had also prepared a CD of some 31 horrifying German covers of American rock songs, which most people never heard playing over Winston's speakers, since they'd hired a very loud production DJ for the event. I also wore my Bavarian Alpen Hat:
There were a LOT of beautiful VW's there, besides that stunning Red DIY DOKA, there was a lime one that I thought was very beautiful:
And it was good to see FNGRUVN, he'd come down with the Ft. Collins crowd, and Rodknock made my week by looking wide-eyed and saying, 'Is THIS Winston?' Winston was otherwise largely ignored by people dazzled by neighboring Syncros and the like, I got miffed enough to ask one fellow who said their van was just like this one, 'Where did you get your jalousies?' That shook people up. The ones who looked thought the Sewfine Interior had turned out pretty well, and I agreed, and my mosquito nets over the windows impressed FNGRUVN and Tina, his gracious lady. JoeTiger's little girl was a welcome visitor, and as usual, families took one look at Winston and realized that family camping perfection had been reached--and abandoned.
No one walked into Winston's open Jalousies, which was a good thing. The Westy folks could eat comfortably in the shade, and did. People sat around talked Vanagons, and enjoyed themselves, e.g:
I talked with the Rocky Mountain Westy guys about de-denting and de-rusting Winston over the upcoming Winter, and I talked with the new folks from Boulder about a new Acrylic 3-Window top, around $850 installed if I let them do it. Tempting...
Last came the lottery, which we entered, having submitted a completed ballot. I don't know if Winston got any votes in any category at all, he certainly didn't win anything, and as for me, well, I got jack:
That's Barb, my gracious and fun date for the event, holding the Hecho in Mexico Old-style screw Bug jack that I won in the lottery. I must now either get an old-style Bug or get me hence to E-Bay.
Now, that's just a small sample of the pictures I took and the sights that I saw. For the WHOLE of the former, at least, you can go to:

I thought this was interesting... sitting in a cafe on vacation last week and saw this magazine which featured a nice shot of the vanagon crew at VWs on the Green in Denver.

Man, I want one of those 3.3 engines so bad. SVX vanagons rock. Looks like it was a great event. My old, p.o.s. vanagon would look lousy next to all of those, but I bet I enjoy mine every bit as much as any of you. Thats what its all about. |
