Just to add my two cents, this is not really a topic which can be answered with references to wikipedia sites. The various interlinkages and politics behind the various designs and designers is quite incomplete to date.

Tatra's independence as the VW designer is far from true when you read deep enough into archive material concerning Ledwinka's ties to certain cruel and powerful people, and how he obtained intelligence from other engineers and incorporated this into the rear-engined designs and prototypes.

The design elements of the Beetle come from so many corners, as do some of the techincal features - the USA, Hungarian engineers, English engineers, etc etc...

But at the end of the day, Porsche was the engineer who put the elements together, who ensured his design was tested night and day - his cars were designed to be strong enough for military use. These are all elements which cumulate into the success that the VW turned out to be. I firmly acknowledge Porsche as the father of the VW (without ingnoring his sources of inspiration).
