What material are you planning to make the body out of? If you're thinking fiberglass I could possibly give you some assistance, I say possibly because I'm not sure how much longer I'll be living around Seattle. _________________ Check my classifieds for kewl gauges:

wow, thank you Charly, I had not seen that photo.
I will be forming the body out of aluminum by hand, but I will also be doing a fibreglass body first as it will be much faster and easier. I'll then have a full size template to make my bucks and panels from.
I had not updated this thread for a while, but I have been sourcing many parts.
here is a set of 356 A brakes that I am going to make *look* like carerra brakes because I can not afford $15,000 brakes.
I also got this set of 356 wheels, notice how a pair of them has a deeper offset. They are original date matching. Notice in the photos on previous pages that the Fetzen has "deeps" in the back in some photos. I will be running these along with the 20mm wheel spacers I am going to machine.
for the engine, I was going to build a 1500 super engine, but after crunching numbers, the cost to power was going to be prohibitive for my budget. I have decided to build a type one VW based engine. Ive sourced an original forged okrasa crank machined out to 81 mm. Ive got a set of well ported 40 x 35.5 heads. 81mm x 94mm will be a 2248cc.
I got this set of NOS (never had fuel in this case) weber DCNF 40mm carbs. I could potentially get more power from some idf's or ida's, but these DCNF's look VERY similar to the DCM-2 "sandcast" carbs on the 4 cam engine in the Fetzen. I like how the throats are touching each other and the manifolds are not split.
with a pair of these
I aleady have an early beetle beam spindle to spindle that I will be converting to look like a kubel beam. I will most likely be using a synchro trans, maybe even a thing "rhino" case for the ridge that runs up the back of it. A split case would be more desirable, but I am not sure about the power handling capabilities.
thank you to everyone who has contributed pictures and/or info!! _________________ drive your split. |

I just got an oval window torsion housing, but I am still looking for a split torsion or even earlier as the original car has a Kubel housing.
still collecting little parts here and there. The "frame" will be built with chromoly for strength and weight.
probably wont start construction for 4 to 6 months. _________________ drive your split. |

There was only about 3 dozen Vintage VW people in the Southern California area in 1982. We all cruised up for the Historic Car Races in Monterey in 1982, the featured marque being Porsche. We met Otto Mathe and checked out his Berlin to Rome race car up close. Porsche also brought over from Germany the 16 cylinder Auto-Union racer.

Great thread, great car, great man !
I find it somehow amusing that a man known for his reknown motor oil additives brand would have a shell sticker on his oil tank
I have heard rumors only today that his cars were sold off quite cheap after he passed away, dunno if that is true though. _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !

I'm sure he didn't have shell oil in that tank either! About the only oil used in the 4 cam engines at that time was Castrol R. _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

Your oil tank is a petrol spare tank. He sure made some money with his additives but not enough to have his own petrol company. The oil tank is the one right behind the seat.
And yes Castrol Rennöl was the one that was chosen for the carrera engines. today we use special diesel oil with all our fuhrmann engines because it can cope with high temperature |
