Over the past two weekends, I have done two road trips with my 1987 Syncro. On both of them, I experienced a few sudden drops in power for a second or two. In 20 hours of driving it happened maybe 5 times.Twice it even seemed like the engine had just stopped running entirely but restarted without a problem (while still at speed on the interstate).

Most of the time I was at cruising speed and not under a particular load but it happened once during town driving accelerating to a gear change and once going up a long grade. At first I thought it was the A/C kicking in causing a power drop, but it is more dramatic than the typical AC drop and it happened without the A/C on this trip so I have eliminated that.

The way it just suddenly drops like someone turned the key off for a millisecond makes me suspect something electrical, but I plan on replacing the fuel filter just because.

Otherwise the van runs great. 17-19 MPG, steady idle. A bit week at low RPMs, but I haven't tuned it to high altitude (5000 ft) since buying it in Seattle.

Any thoughts as to what might be the root cause? Feel free to add recommendeations for high-altitude tuning.

Thanks for the replies. I did recently pull the air flow meter housing (and grounding wire) when I put in a K&N air filter and vacuumed debris out of the air intake quarter panel. Perhaps the ground isn't sufficiently seated.

As to the question of whether I have the fuel injector modification. I am enough of a newbie to not know. I know that the system is fuel injected and that within the past 20K miles the injectors were cleaned to pass emissions. I don't know if the system has been modified in any way.

There is a Bosch ECU under the back seat. I will check its ground as well to make sure it is solid.
